I think a blog or site its very good because you can build an email list fast and you can have a good relation with your customers because they will trust you more if you have a blog this show them...

You can still keep the domain even if you cancel your hostgator account ... you'd have to transfer the domain to a new registrar and if it was a free domain you got with the hosting you'll just have...
