You need manual spinning and not only on the word- but on the sentence-level as well. This way there are more variations, and the article remains mostly readable. Great for backlinking purposes.

I think Senuke is a good tool for making Tier 2 Web 2.0 properties, but you have to use spun articles at least. The problem is it leaves a huge footprint, so for the first Tier, you're much better...

In the case of Web 2.0s, quality sometimes counts more than quantity, you don't have to create tons of them, but make sure you really flash out the ones you have (unique content, images, videos, etc...
