If you don't know what kind of backlinks the competitor has, then you know nothing about him. Those 300 links could be trashy profile links or his first tier of high pr blog network.

Niches are never gone but the exact match domain with your keyword might be. If you find a niche with an EMD ranking on the first page with under 100 backlinks you could EASILY register a keyword...

Google suggstions, is great for finding new keywords, they often don't have that much competition and it's what people are typing in for their searches, i've found interesting new keywords this way,...

You have to look for "incentivized" offers. Most networks don't allow them but from prior experience I do know HydraNetwork (now AdKnowledge) had a lot of incentivized offers.

If you want more than $100 to get started, I also recommend offering services (writing, design, backlink building etc). That's how I made money when I first started as I literally had nothing back...
