There's no difference between dot com and dot net as far as page ranking purposes go but dot com has been ingrained in people's minds for so long that it gives the perception of more authority, even...

.com > .net -- It makes you look more commercialized, and professional. However if the keyword you are targeting only has .net domains, then go for it.
