Thesis is better, but not really.
Is there a reason that you want to use a "child themes" theme?
All that does, really, is add proprietary code on top of WP. It's not really a "theme" at that...

Genesis is a huge PITA to edit. Easily one of the worst "themes" around.
The issue is that it behaves more like a propriety app built on top of WP, as opposed to a good theme. Trying to edit it...

well first thing I would do is go into your phpMyAdmin and a search for the phrase that is being displayed. If it shows up that means the info is in your database, and most likely you can remove it...

Knowing how WordPress works has nothing to do with her issues.
If the excerpt on the front page doesn't change when you alter the post it's based on, it's possible that the excerpt is 'hard-coded'...

"Easy Theme and Plugin Upgrades" by "Chris Jean" is a great tool to have when there are theme/plugin upgrades to be done.. read the instructions first to see if it will do what you need :)

The file containing style.css should be in the root folder of the zip archive. Find where it is, unpack that folder and any subdirectories and then zip up a new archive with that folder in the root.

You need to unzip the file ON YOUR COMPUTER with winzip or similar, then just upload the theme folder.
The reason its broken is because the downloaded zip file probably has tutorials, psd files etc...
