Membership is only a function of the website, has nothing to do with your SEO, now...

I don't use subdirectories or separate domains. Just domain.com/social_network in my case.
Works just fine.

I would set it up as a subdomain so that all the juice from main domain would pass on.

Look apple store, Microsoft store, Microsoft answers or whatever site, it will be a subdomain of the parent.

Or you could do this, same niche but you want to have it to be stand alone

abccustomblogcousre.com

instead of , abc.com/customblogcourse
