Actually I believe the code can be placed anywhere and probably should be placed as far at the bottom as possible. You want the rest of you site to load before other non-important stuff loads like...

you can add a clear image that is hosted on your own server and track the ammount of times that image is loaded. not the most effective way buy a good way to track trends
