Whilst robots.txt can be ignored, apparently .htaccess files can't be. So maybe try the .htaccess option instead.

Google doesn't give much in the way of backlink data outside of Webmaster Tools (and not even much in it) and so competitors can't use it...

It is a footprint, but then not doing it makes it easy for competitors to find your network and submit a spam report on your sites. So, taking a chance either way I think.

It depends how many sites you want to link out to. If you have a 100 or so sites that you want to link out to then you would have to put 100 links on your homepage, which I don't think is a wise...
