You can shorten the URL of the link placed in the image. I use goo.gl to track clicks which also comes with a useful Analytics about the clickers.

Not sure if your client is tech savvy, but they can always go for a server in a colo or an EC2 (Amazon) and run a document management application such as those found on Hotscripts.com...
