I would say yes, you need a natural anchor text profile nowadays. If you target "cat food" you should have max 30% of your anchor text say "cat food" the rest isvariant and garbage keywords.

Maybe edit a template file (depending on how your wordpress is setup for mainpage) and/or use a conditionnal tag ?
