I would suggest you to use 301 redirection on those pages, and redirect them to your index page.. so that whatever link juice they carry won't go waste and your index page will be benefited.

You should always redirect dead links/pages to live web pages.
What I do is a sitewide redirect for any dead links/pages instead of having a 404 page. IMO a 404 page is useless for traffic & waste...
