Google monitor site activities multiple ways

the easiest way they do this is thru the Chrome browser
they can measure heat maps, click activity, scrolling etc...
who knows what else they can...

I totally agree most times we are ranking just on the content alone

Just a few well chosen links helps, but the dwell time/engagement on pages seems to have a stronger pull towards page one...
