In my experience (and testing), I get a better click through rate based on the links being in the left sidebar. It has something to do with people naturally reading from left to right.

I can't speak for AP, but if it's what I'm thinking of, it uses direct mail packages that look like invoices. Once the envelope is opened, you have the normal sales letter, etc.
