It has always been a good idea to diversify Everything, including anchor text, types of links, the pages you link to should be both your main page and the inner pages, income streams etc.

I would never use broad match, some people use phrase match but I generally only use exact match...just make sure that you use the same numbers for comparisons everytime and I would never use broad...
