Yes that's the problem, the strong domains get picked up on auctions while the weak deleted domains can be bought for $10 reg fee. You can't expect to rank much with such domains as the backlink...

Majestic and Ahrefs are the two tools I'd recommend for checking backlinks. There are small discrepancies between the two however, but using both typically uncovers close to hundred percent of links.
