You need a 301 redirect to redirect the link-juice.
The new redirected URL / post should also have the same quality as the previous one.

If you unpublish it you'll get a 404 page not found error...

You may receive some traffic this way too so it's not about just SEO. Just don't leave something like "Yeah, this product was great, I'd recommend it!".

The downside of ranked images is it does take an extra click for traffic to reach your webpage but they're usually easier to rank, so,...
