Facebook is huge! Facebook Ads are cheaper and more targeted than any other PPC and you can build your list with custom fan page tabs. It's a no-brainer to use Facebook for IM!

No it's definitely not vital. It's pretty good for traffic though. Then
again, you can get traffic from pretty much any PPC network if
you know what you're doing.
