Use any WHOIS site, like iWhois.com (http://iwhois.com). If any info comes up, it has not been deleted from the record. If it says 'available', it has been deleted.

In most cases, once it goes through the entire expiration process, it loses its age. If you obtain it before is is deleted from the domain records, it retains its age.

I don't think any tool is 100% accurate but they will help you generate ideas. I use Google's keyword tool and I also use their wonder wheel to drill down a bit more. Traffic Travis is pretty good...
