You can still rank EMDs however G is targeting sites with crappy link profiles and rubbish content. Generally speaking, these sites tend to be EMDs which is why it's under the spotlight.

You can also use Widgets - and place opt-in form code in them. Then you can place them in different areas of you site. Like the header/footer/sidebar/etc...

Oh, and if you want to use the blog, you have to create a blank page (not a post)...call it whatever you want, and set the page template to Blog Template. Then you can set your home page to a static...
