If you "bought" or "joined" bad networks of link builders prior to April 24, 2012 that may be the "Red Flag" google also needed to ban you. In my opinion I'd avoid "private" networks they only work...

Any theme should work however I would use a popular theme as you dont want it to break when you do upgrades etc.
