No problem with using images, RSS feed serves the purpose whether images are used or not. But as mentioned above you might need to protect image using hotlinks to prevent site bandwidth.

It's a good idea to have a main feed and optionally have separate feeds for each of your categories.

Yes linkwheels are meant to boost the link-juice going to your website so you can rank better and rarely for getting the majority of your visitors from the various web 2.0 properties.
