YES its 301 re-direct. You CAN NOT just change the URL to a page. Its that plain and simple. In doing so any links you have associated to that page will return a 404 error. If the page is listed...

I would say "technically" pillar content should be a "page"

If I am reading this correctly, I would create a piece of pillar content as a page with a category, and then create posts to that page...
