Many factors come into play...yes a .com is good, but do not discount a .info...or a .org either, they pay off very nice. Also use google's keyword tool site and go through their list of keywords...

Setting up domains is easy. First I would buy the domain from godaddy and put your hostgator nameservers in to point your domain to hostgator. Then log into hostgator cpanel and click "add on domain"...
