Can you see the ip's or geo location of the signups? if it was automated then chances are the signups will be from a small pool of locations or just major cities where datacenters would be.

Personally I recommend frameworks vs stand alone theme. The main reason is once you are used to a framework like Elegant Themes then you will be familiar with all their themes.
