Having the keyword in a sub-directory is what helps trigger Google Sitelinks and Google Mega Sitelinks, assuming you stay focused with the pages in each directory.

EMD's and PMD's still work perfectly fine and I have multiple sites with the keyword in the domain which are ranking very well even...
