the older versions 4.etc does not work anymore. you need to update to the latest version, which is 5.0.12. You can submit a support request to them directly they are very helpful.

Banners still work very well in some instances. The best advice I can give you is to test it. Look at the stats your getting with regards to click throughs etc.. and make your conclusion from there.
