Exactly like you say, very easy, no need for pyramids as that only leads to loss of link juice.

Penguin 2.0 didn't change a single thing about private networks, all sites that I worked on that had...

If you have a good PR 3 site, make it relevant to your main site and send a few links directly to it. No problem at all.
