One of the ways of increasing your affiliate income is to ensure your links don't scream:

IM AN AFFILIATE WOOHOOO!

ie, something obviously not a direct link.

I've heard that URL shorteners can carry penalties....

So what I do instead is use

YOURLS: Your Own URL Shortener

(its free and open source!) You can install it on your own domain or even in a subfolder.

That way, I can use my own domain to create redirects.

WP users can consider:

  I prefer the .htaccess method. It's very easy. Just upload a file titled .htaccess to the main web folder. Then inside the file use code like the 3 lines below just swapping out shorturl with the short url you want to create and real-location.php the path to the real location:

  RedirectMatch 301 /shorturl1 /real-location1.php

if you're promoting something on payspree you CANNOT redirect your link from a domain. You have to use a link shortener. This is because a redirect will not allow the payspree payment page to come up in a frame. So if you use text ads, or page exchanges, list builders you'll have a problem with a redirect.

I use Htaccess redirect, it's one of the cleanest method i believe.
