Ello is coming!!: Is This the End of Facebook marketing?

Ello is only 8 weeks old, but it's already turning heads among social media experts and users.

Here's their simple manifesto:

Your social network is owned by advertisers.

Every post you share, every friend you make and every link you follow is tracked, recorded and converted into data. Advertisers buy your data so they can show you more ads. You are the product that's bought and sold.

We believe there is a better way. We believe in audacity. We believe in beauty, simplicity and transparency. We believe that the people who make things and the people who use them should be in partnership.

We believe a social network can be a tool for empowerment. Not a tool to deceive, coerce and manipulate -- but a place to connect, create and celebrate life.

So my question is am i wasting money for facebook ads???

Only wasting money if you're unsuccessful.

I can't help but wonder how Ello plans on affording to keep running once the venture capital money runs out.

A number of the larger social networks started off being anti-advertising, but eventually had to start advertising to bring money in. Facebook didn't serve ads in the beginning, Twitter used to be ad-free, Tumblr has sponsored posts and even Pinterest is rolling out advertising.

It costs a lot of money to keep a social media site running and the money has to come from somewhere...

Ello experience will "always remain free," according to Budnitz, people will be able to expand Ello's capabilities, spending a few dollars for that new killer feature - whatever it is.

"Say you're a musician or a band, and you want to control multiple accounts from a single login," said Budnitz. "We can charge $2 for that. It's not for everyone."

Budnitz says he's seen thousands of emails from users suggesting features that they'd be willing to pay for, and Budnitz says there's already plenty in the works.

This is the first time that I have heard of Ello

It seems like a lot of people are wasting money with facebook ads.

Facebook my change their ad cost once they discover that a lot of people have stopped using their ad system.

Or they will become like Google with very high ad cost

With over 1 billion members and growing, they will most likely continue to increase their ad cost.

I'm a little late to the party but I'd say you aren't.

The only way that Ello is going to truly take off is if we see a huge mass migration once it's out of it's beta period. A lot of people remain on Facebook because that's where everyone they know is. Ello has picked up some momentum... but outside the tech and advertising communities it's barely picked up.

Facebook still has the majority of the social network audience and is expanding it's advertising assets, so it's guaranteed to be profitable for the time being.

Start really worrying when Facebook's death knell is actually tolling.

Ello sounds interesting. Any platform that can give you a great ROI with your advertising is worth looking at. I'm also a big believer of not putting all your eggs in one basket.

Done right Facebook ads are laser targeted & a marketers dream.

      Cheers

Either you are or you aren't making money with Facebook ads. Ello is irrelevant to that. Ello is right now mostly just white space. Nothing going on there. You won't find your friends on Ello, or even people you know, most likely. You won't find a lot of people and you won't find ads, so how is Ello at all relevant to business in any way?

I personally do not understand the current hype about ello. YES facebook got very commercial and YES facebook does collect data from their users but I do not think that ello can be better than facebook. I got an invitation and I am on ello. Looking forward to see their changes. Right now ello is nothing!

I am all in on Ello actually, I think it's going to be a great platform down the road. Right now, however, FB and Twitter are the best options hands down. I will continue to abuse them until I have no other choice but to stop. Never stop doing what works.
