Hey guys,

I started using Facebook Ads to promote an offer in the IM arena and I am not seeing very much success. My daily budget is small at the moment as I plan on scaling up once I hit on an ad that begins converting. I'm not exactly sure what the expected conversion rates are from FB advertising (Of course there are numerous variables), but I'm thinking my conversions should be a bit higher.

Given that there are so many variables involved, I was wondering If anyone with FB advertising experience could be so kind as to take a quick glance at my ad copy and image and perhaps provide a little feedback, I'd be extremely appreciative. I'm not sure if it's my image, copy, targeting, etc. I am happy to shoot the details over via email.

Thanks so much!

Scott

IM is a highly contested arena so your ads are probably being delivered around the same time as thousands of other marketers are delivering theirs. Are you are sending traffic directly to a squeeze page or fanpage? Are you doing newsfeed only or newsfeed + display? Don't forget the majority of traffic is mobile right now and you need to be sure your squeeze pages are responsive.

Thanks so much for the reply. I think you bring up a good point about the competitive nature of the industry and how that may be affecting my conversions. I am sending traffic to a squeeze page and at the moment, I'm doing display and mobile. I gave newsfeed a shot, but didn't see many clicks. I will check to make sure my squeeze page is responsive. This is my first foray into FB advertising and PPC in general...trying to get things ironed out.

        Hi ScottBeckstead,

There a variety of strategies for marketing in Facebook. Here are a couple popular ones:
        • Direct Response - Use ads that send users to your own website as a lander.
        • Social Banding - Develop a fan page, send traffic there and learn what type of posts your audience responds to the most, then use those marketing insights for your direct response campaigns.

Regardless of your overall strategy, CTRs are heavily influence by images on FB. Start by testing various types of images.

Once you learn which images your targeted audience responds well to, test various value propositions to see which your target audience engages with the most. By measuring the engagement levels generated by various value propositions you will learn which value propositions your particular audience values the most. Make sure your landing pages prominently reinforce those important value propositions and you are likely to improve conversion rates substantially.

Obviously this is just the tip of the iceberg, so to speak, over simplified, but enough to get you started in the right direction.

Thanks so much dburk for the helpful advice. I was reading an article the other day that echoed the importance of images. I think it's time to do a little split testing using different images. I need to make sure there is a strong connection between my landing page and FB ad, thank you for the reminder. This is all new to me so I appreciate the tremendous insight. It sounds like testing is really the name of the game!

    1. The color of an image is what gets an ad noticed.
    2. The description of the ad is what gets it clicked.
    3. The visitors will more likely sign up if the squeeze page is more than what they expected.

Ask your friends what they think of your page or ad, and use the feedback you get to improve them before launching an ad and tell them that you do not mind if they give you criticism as they can help you save lots of money by giving you good feedback.
