Doing all sorts of testing to see what works best for you is the way to go and gives you all the data you are looking for on what works best for you and what doesn't.

Getting a mentor is all good but sometimes what works really well for them may not work well for others.

The same way you become an expert in anything else....by just doing it.

Try out the things you read about and if it doesn't work try something else and then tweak it.

When you get results record them and share them with others that need help.

Keep doing it until you're confident enough to market yourself as an expert.

This will be a long and hard process. You will need to be ready to do lots of hard work.
The best thing to do is to start trying out things. Read from forums, blogs and websites about social media and apply what you learn. Its also good to keep yourself updated with social media news to back up with your knowledge. Things will be on a trial-and-error basis and you must learn from your mistakes so you won't repeat it the next time and you start again on trying.

Read about it, learn by doing and challenge yourself.
@saranyasb, it's really not a very complicated process. It just takes a lot of time, especially because there is so much competition in this field! Everyone and their dog call themselves an expert these days As long as you know how to be one step ahead of everyone, you should be fine.

I agree with the above comments. Social media is an ever changing industry and a lot of hard work needs to be put in before you can consider yourself an expert. I have been in the field over almost a decade and still learn new tools, tips and tricks. My advice is to stay on top of the lasted trends and tools. If you do, you will be ahead anyone who needs your social media management services. Good luck!

I would pick a niche and learn as much as you can about it. That will make you good at finding relevant content fort that niche. Offer to help a few people for free. Once you are getting results you can reach out and sell your social media services to people in your niche.

Try test learn and study. That is the case with internet marketing in general. Personally I gave up social media way back and focus more on just list building.

Which is annoying me a bit because I know that social media can be great to build a list.

I just didn't get the hang of the social media part when I was trying.

Yes, i agree with most of the above. You should first learn as much as possible about social media by reading related blogs, courses etc and then by creating a website and networking with people with similar interests and depending on how much work you put into it after a while you should be able to reach your goal

    It's only about TWO things:
    1. Study/Learn Facebook
    2. Apply
(Repeat 1 and 2 every now and then)

I am not a social media expert but handling social networking sites has been part of my job.
And here's what I can say about it,
    - you must learn how to experiment especially with your strategies
    - social media is all about interaction
    - always keep your followers up-to-date and make them engage
    - Do not engage on traffic/like exchange sites

Im not a big big expert but I know the right knowledge. And you sure you can learn the same knowledge and become good at social media.

I'm currently building up my Facebook Network and that alone has given me so much exposure online. I would recommend you to work with one social network at a time to get the best results!

    I hope this helps!

    Cheers!

The best thing to do is to just go out and engage with social media.

Create accounts, and POST POST POST. Always come up with new and exciting content and engage users with tags. When people comment, be sure to reply back. Build your network and interlink to each other.

    Also pick one platform
Master it then move on (unless of course it makes you wise, wealthy)

When you use google+ you will find the learning curve much easier for pinterest, instagram and tumblr as these platforms tax different aspects from each other

haha this is a funny question. You need to actually apply yourself and become better than other people who call themselves social media experts.

For example like me. A guy who made over $50,000 with only one youtube video! Try to copy that.

Nothing teaches you better than experience. Read up on good blogs, and start practicing what your learn. If you want to learn fast, you can hire a coach who can help you, but I recommend studying on your own.

It most definitely comes down to experience.
But you need to be focused and targeted in order to have any level of success.

Pick your niches, and who would qualify as an ideal customer for your end game goal.

Decide on a maximum of three platforms (ideally, ones that interconnect with one another such as FaceBook + Instagram for example) so that you can maximize productivity when it comes to sharing your content.

Ensure to interact and engage consistently with your current friends / fans, and always be expanding your reach to new people in your marketplace.

I would start by researching and focusing on one or two social media platforms at a time then move on to the next. It would be alot smarter and easier than trying to figure out a little of all of them at once.

It is not an overnight task. Maybe you can read a lot of books and have perfected so many terms but experience will do it all. In addition, prove us that you are an expert by producing something huge in Social media.

Start with FB, when you are comfortable with marketing on FB, then go to Google +, after you are good in G+, then tackle Instagram, and so on. Don't try to learn all of them at once because you will just confuse and frustrate yourself. Pick up some training on doing FB marketing (Matt Bacak has some good FB training), when you have mastered that, then get some training on G+, etc..
As a noob, you should create a FB page that you can use to learn on before you start experimenting with your main page.

It will take a lot of time but few things will help you become an expert
    1. You have to change with trend on social sites.
    2. Do proper research
    3. Try to remain active on peak time when maximum audience remain online to share your posts

No one can make you learn or teach you about the logic, strategies and thinking ability.
These all are the key factors for becoming an expert in social media marketing.

Apart from that, try to research about social media networks and their uses.
Develop relationship with key influencers and target audiences.
Use some social analytic to identify demographics of customers.
