If you took your water cooler, networking event, business card holder, and Rolodex, smooshed them together, and put that concoction up on a domain, you would approximate LinkedIn.

People build out their profiles to showcase their professional background and resumes. They are able to connect with individuals they know or have worked with, leave each other recommendations, and find new connections. LinkedIn can also be a great place to look for and find a job, as it takes the utility of job boards and adds in the human connections that are so invaluable in finding the right position.
For companies, especially recruiters, that is just the beginning. Business professionals have created their profiles and gotten recommendations from co-workers, making it a solid fit for brands looking to recruit new talent. LinkedIn allows hiring managers to search and filter candidates based on multiple factors, and users can join groups based on professional interests.

First make sure that your profile is complete with resume, contact info, and portfolio.

As a new user on LinkIn I would recommend you do the following:

    1. Join as many groups as you can related to your field of expertise, in your case graphic design.

    2. Participate in the discussions and start building your credibility by answering people's questions.

    3. Find interesting posts that you really enjoy and comment on them describing how much you liked it. People will definitely respond back especially if you just complimented them on their post. Really get to know these people and show that you really appreciate them.

    4. When you've built some type of relationship then go ahead and connect with them.

    5. When they accept, send them a direct message explaining how much you appreciate getting to know them and include how impressed you were from their resume and work they have done. Ask if they would like to chat sometime and include your phone number at the end of your message.

    6. When they say yes ask them what day and times work best for them. Give them two options: 2 days and 2 different times.

    7. Call them on whatever day you agreed upon and just keep things casual. Continue getting to know them and focus on just being really good friends. At some point you'll be able to talk business. Friends like helping friends out, but don't force anything upon each other just let it all happen naturally.

Be sure you do not just hit connect. When you just hit connect and let linkedIn send the standard message, most people will not connect and if you do that a lot you can be banned from linkedIn.

Be sure that you know that person and click to connect with the message of how you know them and a person message.

When you join groups, which has been mentioned above, you can connect with people you don't know but as was mentioned establish a relationship first.

Post articles that are news and have something to with business or just fun.
Doesn't have to be about your business particularly.

If you want to quickly grow your network, you can also connect to people without knowing them. Just make sure that your profile is well-filled, then define your target market and start sending connection requests. But before connecting check how many connections that person has. People having 500+ connections will most probably confirm your request without even contacting you first.
Those who have not so many connections are usually more picky and may decline your request.

If to many people decline your requests you won't actually get blocked instantly. You will just get a notification when trying to add new connection saying that you are restricted to add new connections, but you can click "Remove restriction", read an abstract from rules, confirm that you're going to be a good boy and restriction is removed.
I definitely know that you can it can happen to you twice without negative consequences. Probably if you get a lot of rejects again - the third restriction will be permanent. But you can easily add a few thousand connections even before getting second warning.

Just search for Groups of Web Designers, plenty of them should turn up. Pick out the ones that seem most relative to you. Here's a list of the ones my search turned up :

    LinkedIn is important.

Networking, testimonials in the form of recommendations, adding projects you work on and linking your clients to the project, you can link your Behance portfolio to it.

I have received several job offers from LinkedIn and I actually don't have a lot on there besides some recommendations and endorsements from colleagues and clients.

When a art director or an agency or a client are looking for a designer they'll probably do a search on LinkedIn for designers within an area. It happens a lot in Oz at least.
