I'd say you should just test things out and see what works for you specifically. Divide your budget accordingly and set up your ad campaigns one at a time, see which method brings in the best results.

When it comes to social networks, people will, obviously, trust other people rather than an inanimate object (ads), posting to groups in your niche or sending private messages to "friends" is much effective than ads (even targeted ads).
