"Are You Jumping on This New Marketing Surge or Getting Left Behind?"

In the last year alone, it’s reported that How To (Explainer) Video views on YouTube have exploded a whopping 70% from just a year ago. Wow! Plus, of that 70% ... 30% end up buying.

If your not taking advantage of this surge, shame on you. Here’s a recent article that explains this incredible surge and how you can take advantage of it now... while it's soaring up.

How-To Searches Explode On YouTube

  • The challenge (for most) is to produce professional looking videos that can convert into sales.

Many marketers might think their videos are great, but in reality, they suck!
    (My opinion).

I mean, going to a clickbank vendors website, then scrolling down the site while recording it,
and uploading that to YouTube, and slapping an affiliate link to it,
is an insult to the name "video".

I also skip most of those "power point slideshow converted to video" type videos,
and I definitely can't handle seeing one more "animated hand drawing" videos.

And if you are still making plain white background with black text videos,
then you really need to stop!

    So what's left?

You'd be surprised what you can do with some chroma key and a pretty girl.

Or maybe some talented animation etc.

In short, I'd really like to see something fresh (original) coming from you marketers.

That seems to be the misconception. These are not sales videos people are flocking to in record numbers. They are how to videos made for the most part by average people, one person (independent contractor type) businesses, and small businesses.

The videos simply show you how to do something with a small mention at the end to click on a link for more info on the _____________ they were demonstrating or explaining. Nothing super slick or fancy for the most part. That's the beauty.

The hard part is not having to get super slick video production that can convert sales from YouTube. The hard part is not making it too complicated and being able to zero in on what your market wants to know how to do. Then matching it with a follow up product or service - that you close on your website, landing page or squeeze page.

the problem I have with this is there's a large disconnect between the purpose and effectiveness of these videos.

I deal with LOCAL smb partners in my day job quite often. I'll give you an example of where this fails.

right now I'm building a walk-in closet addition to my house. I youtube searched different ways to mix 'mud', otherwise known as sheetrock compound.

Ive found a few videos. none of the companies are local. If I found a local painter who gave me an informative video, I'd consider hiring him for a future project, especially when its messy work that takes time, and needs finessing, like mudding drywall.

so whats the point? If your informative video doesnt even reach the right audience, then you're likely wasting time.

if you're an international brand, like Ford, and you're making a youtube video on how to setup your bluetooth sync. Thats cool. It helps. but you're national in reach.

A local business typically doesnt have the branding power or authority to do the above, and niche videos will be buried in youtube purgatory if theres already an existing how-to video, by someone else, like your competitor even, or not a competitor possibly, thats been around a long time, works well, and is viewed by many.

If you're happy to be left behind, I could only assume you're absolutely positive your target market will never go there ... as well as your competition?

That makes sense, I understand this may not be for everyone.

That's true. But then again that's true in any case, not just YouTube videos. Just make sure your market and competitors aren't quietly moving there and you're the last to know.

Offering services isn't the only possible revenue stream for something like this. A local contractor can also link to their own page with affiliate links for products from eBay, Amazon, etc. They can also monetize their videos and pages using AdSense. In this case, their "market" can be located all over the world.

Also, a local contractor isn't limited to their own videos. They can advertise cheaply on other videos targeting their ads by geographic location.

This is one time that I'm happy to be left behind. Maybe in a perfect world, I'd have unlimited resources of time, energy and talent to spend on making videos. But this world is far from perfect and I'm out of time, overworked and don't really have the skills, knowledge or talent to make top-quality videos. And as far as I'm concerned, if we what we do isn't going to be top-quality, it's not worth doing at all.

So if video marketing is working for others, I congratulate them, but there's no way I'm going to let my company be distracted from what we do best in order to follow some trend just because it's working for other people. We know what our competitive advantage is and we're gonna stick to that.

Anyone have any tips for creating professional how to videos? I've purchased everything for audio recordings, but video is a different beast. Any recommendations for screen capture software and easy to use video editing software? I have Adobe Premiere, but it's a nightmare for 10 minute videos.

I write a lot of explainer scripts for one of my major clients and they do extremely well with them. Here's a basic rundown of how you can do these yourself-

    1) Write a script. You'll want your video to be around 180 words total, which equals out to about a minute and a half of video if you're speaking properly. Make the content informational BUT end with a call to action.

    2) Either make a whiteboard video using software (like VideoScribe, Ydraw, etc) or record it with your smartphone. They are both easy to make but if you use your smartphone, make sure you have good lighting and a solid $30-50 microphone. Sound quality is big in either case.

2a) If you go the animated route, you choose photos/drawings to make slides with....it's basically an animated PowerPoint presentation. Then you upload your voice messaging for each frame. It is extremely easy to do and there are dozens of sites out there with very reasonable monthly membership rates.

    3) Upload the explainer video to youtube and be sure to use keywords in the title and the description. Also post the video on your website, on social sites (especially Google+) and anywhere else you have a following.

That's basically it....just write a good story, find a solid voice actor and you're good with either method.

I noticed as well that "how to" videos are very popular lately. It's easier to watch a how to video, instead of reading text you might not fully understand, so it's no wonder they've become so popular!
