There's a lot of ways you could go about this.

Personally I think posting on groups is a waste of time. It's obvious spam, and you won't win any points in your favor by doing this. I always tend to stay away from any pages I see promoted in this way.

Gems are usually discovered, and sought after. They don't need to scream for your attention.
(pretty good metaphor if I don't say so myself).

I don't claim to be an expert, but I know a thing or two.

#1: Content is crucial. If you don't have worthwhile content on your page, no one will take the effort to become a part of it. Make sure that you have the most relevant, highest quality, best crafted post pinned to the top. Simply click the arrow at the side of the post and select "Pin to Top".

Aim to give you potential fans, a good reason to like you page. If you top post says "join my super awesome mailing list", you're doing it wrong.

#2: Page graphics are important! Grab yourself a couple of graphicriver templates and make your page look professional!

#3: Engage with you current audience. Influence them to help you increase your audience base.

#4: Keep posting high quality content and run facebook ads campaigns on those posts. People try to stay away from paid promotions because they thing it's going to cost them their first born child. However, that is not the case. A couple of buck will be more than enough for you to reach a very wide audience. Make sure to run and optimize campaigns for CPM.

#5: Get in touch with other pages and try to find a method for mutual promotion.
Maybe you could post a part of their content and say "read the full article here:"
And they could do the same.

There are many more strategies you can follow. Simply keep in mind that you are dealing with human beings and find the best way to grab their attention.

Add value to your posts. Always try to post something that could attract people and compel them to share your post. If your post goes viral, you can get great success in terms of likes.
Don't focus on numbers but rather on the quality of your posts.

Buy the first few thousand fans via targeted and geo-targeted Facebook ads (real ones - not like farm sites!), and consistently and reguarly post engaging images and videos relative to your niche every day (tip: Pinterest has loads of engaging images and other FB pages will upload viral videos you can share without worryng about copyright issues).

If you have a website, add a lightbox pop up with a Facebook "like my page" button, works like a charm.

The best way to get more Facebook likes is through paid advertising. Although it may cost you a bit in advertising in Facebook ads, but it's going to be worth it. Free methods can eat up a lot of your time like engaging in related pages and groups, but at least it's another way of getting more FB likes.

Stay away from groups and like for like sites, they do nothing for you. Social proof is nonsense (trust me I burned through a lot of money proving this fact). You need REAL active Facebook fans, not dead fans from some clickfarm or automated service. How do you get those real fans for free? One word: organic reach. Actually that's two words, but nevermind. You need to massively increase your reach, but at litle or no cost.

So do you remember the good ol' days when you could post a meme of a Japanese cat sitting in a cardboard box and everyone and their mum on Facebook would share it and you would get 2,000 new fans overnight? No? Well actually it used to happen quite a lot, and still does - albeit less frequently so since Facebook cracked down on low quality memes. But the fact is when you post highly engaging content on Facebook that ends up being shared widely you will attract new fans, naturally. I call it "going a bit viral" and the more people like, comment and share your amazing post, the more Facebook will show it to new people, boom.

So here is the repeatable formula laid out that has worked for me in gaining many hundreds of thousands of new Facebook fans without spamming groups, using click for click services or other waste of time and possibly ban-worthy tricks...

1: Find engaging content - images, quotes, puzzles, quizzes, question images, profound stuff, riddles, and viral videos you can re-share onto your fan page. Pinterest is great for this (search for image puzzles, quotes, etc) and also studying other successful fan pages - radio stations are a great place to start looking, weirdly.

2: Make an organised collection of these valuable resources, and figure out an effective posting schedule (tip: use Facebook insights data or Fanpage Karma to figure out when your fans are most active).

3: Post this engaging content once every 1-3 hours onto your Facebook fan page. A mix of images, re-shared trending videos and question-based status updates works best (i.e. What would your bucket list be? Answers in the comments please!) - I'm sure you can think up more.

Be patient - building up a targeted fan page of quality users take months and years, not days and weeks (unless you have £10,000 to blow on paying for page likes). It's a valuable asset that could feed you for years to come - or you could sell the fan page when it gets large enough - so don't risk losing it by buying 3rd-party likes or spamming groups with bots.
