Reddit is a good source for traffic, but they absolutely hate spam. Give them something useful to share and talk about and your gold. Think about a kitten in a superman cape or something...not some crappy get rich fast garbage.

Make sure that you get involved in the community first. The reddit system is based on "karma". Make sure that you upvote stories that you like, you follow other redditorst in your niche, you comment and get involved.

You will build your profile but you will understand what kind of content reditors in that niche are looking for. Then you can test them by posting links from popular sources ( they like popular sources ), and get on the front page with them. People will start following you if they like what you share. Then you can add some links from your site but only if it is the kind of content that they are expecting and don't do it often.

It's good for niches that have subreddits and for news sites.

It's a bit tricky if you're simply leading people to glorified sales puff pieces

Reddit users can get quite harsh when it comes to spamtastic content

It never worked for me when I was sharing my blog posts to the threads. However, if you join in a discussion, provide useful relevant (!) information and leave a link to a relevant blog post, then it does get a lot of traffic. So yes, Reddit is worth trying as a traffic generation channel.

A lot of good feedback here already. @thedark pretty much nailed it!

I have used reddit to drive traffic to a blog type website in the past. I got a lot of traffic, but a high bounce rate and very low conversions.

I could have solved that by doing more of what @thedark is proposing, and paying more attention to what kind of websites and content my target subreddits liked the most. My website had a too "pop-culture" and "lifestyle" feel to it with adsense/affiliate banners, whereas the most popular website submissions that seemed to get the most love where on more "plain" websites with little to no advertising. I am sure a more plain native ad style blog would have worked better for me.

Tl;dr: Do what @thedark said, and test for yourself.

      (Emphasis is mine.)

How many of you remember the days when just about every website had a hit counter at the bottom, and it was a status symbol to display a large number?

You could set the wheels spinning like the price on a gas pump, and still make nothing. But, by golly, you sure had a lot of visitors. Either that, or you used the animated gif of a spinning traffic counter.

Go ahead and test reddit (and other traffic sources). Just keep in mind that you can't pay the rent with traffic. The landlord is still old-fashioned enough to demand money.

have a question to all you reddit experts. I know reddit hates spam, and that the true way to get large amounts of traffic is to share something "likeabel" - If you follow what I just said, how often can you post on a daily basics to not get shut down ?

No one can say for sure. the culture varies from subreddit to subreddit. Think of each as its own forum.

However, if you're looking to advertise what you have in your sig...good luck.

The comments here are very good. Reddit is my main traffic source after Google. I started using reddit long before I started my online business and I don't go to reddit just to post links to my site. I go to reddit to be involved in communities with similar interests to mine. If someone is having a problem in my niche that I can solve then I try to help them out. Sometimes my site can solve their problem so then I provide an appropriate and targeted link.

Luckily people find my site useful and post links to my site for me now that it is becoming well known. Most days I only get 30-50 visitors from reddit but on days with popular links I can get 300-500. Since most of the external links to my site are on reddit it is also responsible for boosting my search engine rankings.

when it comes to paid traffic,

However you can invest time there and get

I've been able to drive some decent traffic with Reddit, yes. Just make sure you are actually linking to engaging and valuable content. Also be sure you put you links in a relevant subreddit.

If I were you, I'd create a throwaway account first, build up the karma for about a week or so, and then try to drive traffic with it. That way if you make a mistake and end up getting downvoted to oblivion it won't be on your main account It's typically a little safer.

Would be very, very difficult, in my opinion. The entire ethos of the site works against you doing that, so it is like a minefield.

Reddit is great for driving instant and huge traffic. The best thing about Reddit is the right source of audience. While submitting your link, you will only see those subreddits which you have subscribed.
    • Write eye catchy titles. This is most important.
    • Up-vote, save as favorite and comment on other’s submission and in return they will do the same to you.
    • Avoid doing down-vote for any submissions.
    • There are several groups of Reddit users on Facebook and Google+. Join those groups and share your subreddits. Vote the group member’s subreddit on Reddit and they will do the same for you. This is one of the best ways to increase traffic.

Yes reddit is good source for getting traffic.

There is no any rocket science just create your profile and start postings in different sub reddits

One thing keep in mind that before posting must read rules.

Reddit and be tough, and by tough I mean it's users aren't afraid to let you know in the harshest possible terms when they think something is sh*t! I've personally found marketing on there hard work, as the subreddits covering my niche aren't really that active in terms of "upvotes" and "karma" - which you need to be noticed. You can definitely generate traffic if you post the right type of content, though. Think viral stuff like flying cats or people falling off skateboards. Interesting facts and breaking news stories are also highly shareable.
