I have started a Tumblr page few months ago and now I have 1200 followers. It's in the entertainment/gaming category. The blog is growing, many posts went viral so it seems that people like my content.

I have a couple of questions:

- Does Tumblr good for getting traffic to your main site? Similar content but way more, same niche. My personal experience is that it is nearly impossible. People don't really click on links.
- Is there a way to monetize it? Tumblr users seems to see the posts in tumblr feeds and via search tags, so pageviews aren't that good. Adsense is not an option this way.
- When should I start considering own domain instead of Tumblr's?
- What would you consider a good amount of followerbase and average notes/post on Tumblr?
- Is there a way to manipulate your viewers to go to your desired link for more content? Like creating a habbit?

Thanks for the replies and feel free to ask new questions!

I don't have an answer to all your questions, but if you post a link to an interesting article like if you choose the link option (instead of photo) when you create your post, people who are interested in reading the article will click the link. Also, if you post a caption with a pic and have a "read more" link in the caption that takes them to an external site, they might click it. People on Tumblr seem to be mostly interested in appealing pics and gifs, but they will read something if you make it something interesting.

This is very true, however it's also true with videos, so if you have anything on youtube, put it through tumblr it can work wonders at times. Tumblr is mostly photos gifs and videos, but I've had luck throwing the odd article in among the photos, but I have decorated all my posts the post with a interesting and relevant pictures to get attention.

Yes, TumblR can be AWESOME SAUCE for making money.

However, you do not want to monetize directly on Tumblr. Your better angle is to get traffic to your main site. And then monetize your site with relevant offer.

Done the right way, you can get LOADS of traffic and backlinks from Tumblr.

In fact, it's probably the #1 SEO secret weapon that marketers are not using right now.

If you wish to do so, you can place ads on your Tumblr blog though.

Yes, just tried it and links seems to work. I mostly post gifs and in the past I only posted links under them and got 0 clicks or a few if I got hundreds of reblogs. Now I tried to make similar content on my main site and linked from there with a fancy thumbnail and got visitors instantly.

I have a couple of monetization ideas in mind on my site, is there a good link/post ratio on Tumblr? I know that on Facebook it's not too good to only post links, that's why I am curious.
