social networking site traffic

Hi Peeps,

Been on and off this site for a few years but mainly lurking in the background watching and pickng up tips. Just started a new social networking site and was thinking what is the best way to get an instant hit of sign ups so it doesn't look like a ghost town to the newest users. There are also forums that will obvioiulsy not have much stuff in there part from a few barking dogs and some tumbleweed.

I am sure I can get traffic but it's getting the initital traffic to stick around long enough to interact with the next wave. I dont want to drive any traffic to the site just yet because of this issue. I need the Warriors Wisdom on this one, I am also dedicating a part of my site to Warriors who want to promote their products for free.

Thanks

Dafella

Have you thought about instagram shoutouts? Or maybe paid tweets from popular twitter accounts? I would definitely consider this.

I would think the big social media sites are where you should start promoting. Think about running a paid Facebook ad campaign to help gain your initial users. Like others have suggesting, think about using shout outs or featured posts to gain recognition, as well.

It's going to be a tough hill to climb. Don't mean to be negative, but most of the social sites that got big had deep pockets or their hands in deep pockets. Do you?

Add as much value yourself to the site, to give people a reason to show up, then network on other social media sites to drive traffic to yours. My thoughts.

What is the name of your new social site? Is it "Peeps"? You called us "peeps" and I don't like it.
However, for you initial stage, you should try PPC policy. Good luck.

No it's not called Peeps, but that is a good name if you ask me, short and you would remember it. I am launching it in two weeks, I will let you know how I get on. Oh only problem is I have had to make it paid membership to keep spammers out, and obviously get a wage so that is another hurdle I shall have to cross, however what the site is about shall attract like minded people and I am sure they are willing to pay a tiny sum to connect with each other on a great platform.

Seek out free publicity... things like press releases and live interviews (even if only on iternet radio). On these interview share the benefit that listeners/readers will gain from using the site. The media will happily promote you and your site IF you approach them fro the angle of this is what I have to offer your audience, and this is how I can help make you look good.

A good media writeup CAN generate tens of thousands of visitors and be more powerful than buying tens of thousands of dollars worth of advertising because when the media features you, it's an indirect endorsement and doesn't come across the same way that a paid ad does!

I don't mean to discourage you, and I'm not saying that you can't start a successful social network...but...that's going to be a tough one to crack.

Facebook has enough niche groups and communities that I personally think most people don't need a "specialized social network." With so many facebook users, there are countless more like-minded people already on FB than there would be on a new, specialized network. Facebook makes it easy enough to connect with these like minded people that I just don't see enough demand for a specialized social network...especially not for one that requires paid membership.

You have to ask yourself what problem does your target demographic face and how does your service solve it? Is your solution worth paying for, when there FB is free and offers the opportunity to connect with far more people?

For all i know, maybe it is. I just have a hard time picturing it.

Blogging and Article submission are great ways to promote a new platform, engage in forum and other discussion boards like Yahoo and promote at other social media.
