Case Study : How I Built 10,000 Facebook Fans Within 1 Week

If you’re struggling with finding social traffic, this article can be a lifesaver.

As you’re about to see, I was able to generate 10,000 Facebook fans with a measly $50 ($52.06 to be exact) spent on FB ads.

And the best part?

This was all achieved in just 1 week!

Once you have a sizeable fan base, you will have a targeted audience to communicate to on Facebook. Of course, you can then easily send your fans over to your website and offer them your products and services.

I’m going to show you the process that I implemented step-by-step to accomplish this.

Please keep reading.

Facebook is the new Google.

Today, it’s not easy to quickly drive traffic using SEO to a brand new website.

(Within 1 week? No way – that’s simply just impossible!)

Smart marketers now turn to Facebook as their primary source of traffic.

But there is 1 problem: Most people don’t know how to acquire traffic using Facebook’s advertising platform both cheaply and fast.

In this experiment, I rolled up my sleeves and got to work on setting up a brand new BMW fan page and show you how I acquired a huge fan base for it.

And the results speak for themselves…

9,030 Facebook fans in 1 week with a measly ad spend of $52.06

I got about 1000+ free page likes when people shared some of my posts. That’s a bonus to me.

So, it’s a total of 10,121 page likes:

And with active post engagements on my posts.

Here is a post with 6,839 people reached.

And a total of 725 likes, comments and shares.

My posts on my fan page resulted in an initial influx of targeted traffic to my brand new website:

As you can see, you CAN succeed in driving traffic from Facebook quickly and at a very low cost.

Even if your site is only a few days old!

Now that you have seen my results, it’s time for me to walk you through the step-by-step process that I used.

Just keep reading…

My first step was to set up a Facebook fan page for my niche.

I just started a new viral video site on BMW cars then, so I needed a fan page for it.

It’s totally free and easy to set up a Facebook fan page. I created my page in less than 5 minutes.

Next, it was time to actually publish content on my page.

I collected a couple of images to upload to my BMW fan page. I wanted to do it so that my page won’t look “blank”.

These were just some fillers to complete my fan page before I sent traffic to it.

I hopped over to http://pinterest.com

I punched in the key phrase “BMW cars” into the Pinterest search box to find the images that I wanted.

I went through the search result images and selected a couple of images that I liked.

It was nothing big what I picked at that point.

I just wanted some images to post on my fan page so that it won’t look blank to its visitors.

(Side note: Don’t waste too much time on this)

Once I had my fan page ready to rock, I got down to business buying some traffic to it.

The sad truth is this:

When people publish a few posts on their fan page, most of them just cross their fingers and HOPE that their posts get viral.

Some know better.

They understand that any fan page needs promotion, but they’re afraid to go out and pay for traffic.

Because they’re unsure of the price they’re going to be charged for their ads.

Here is what you should always keep in mind…

This is why I always go for countries with tons of ad inventory nobody wants to bid for, just sitting there for anyone to take.

Unless my niche forces me to advertise only to US audiences (example: US veteran), I rarely start any ad campaign targeting the US.

That’s the last country that I would run my ads to –

…Until I’ve had my pie on the rest of the English-speaking audiences in other countries.

Most marketers target their ads at US audiences only.

Their theory is this: the US population is the most profitable to monetize with.

There is nothing wrong with that theory, but there is a big problem…

People in the US are constantly bombarded with ads on their Facebook newsfeeds almost every day.

They’re less responsive to ads compared to FB users in a developing country who rarely see any ad pop up on their newsfeeds.

I get good CTR on my ads when I run them overseas.

That’s reason No. 1 why I run ads overseas – I get high ad click through rates.

Reason No. 2 why I’m not running ads to US audiences is this: it’s expensive.

99% of advertisers compete for the same ad inventory in the US. So the ad prices are expensive in most of the niches that you can think of.

There are so many English-speaking populations outside the US and Canada.

The UK, Australia, New Zealand are the obvious alternatives.

And the not-so-obvious ones?

Well, we have the Commonwealth countries – 53 member states that were mostly territories of the former British Empire.

They have an estimated combined population of 2.328 billion at present, nearly a third of the world population.

Most of the population read and speak English.

India is one of the former Commonwealth countries. The number of Indians who speak English is almost half the US population!

Apart from Commonwealth countries, there are millions of people in Western Europe and in Asia who read and speak English almost every day.

There is a huge, huge population out there we can run ads to.

Not only are these people cheaper to reach, they’re also more responsive to ads on their Facebook newsfeeds.

First, I created a new Page Like campaign.

Then I created my ad sets.

I created 7 ad sets, setting up each one with $1 daily budget.

That means I wanted to spend $1 per day for each of my ad sets.

Since I had 7 ad sets, the maximum I’d spend was $7 per day.

Next, I set up the target countries, interests, age group and language. The countries were mostly developing ones each with a significant population who speak English.

Most advertisers don’t run ads to these countries. There’s a huge inventory of ads sitting out there, ready to be sold to me at dirt cheap pricing.

I run my ads on mobile newsfeed only.

Which means that my ads will show up on people’s FB newsfeeds only when they’re on mobile devices.

Here is my first ad in action:

As you can see, my ad copy is short and to the point.

I asked a question and get my target audience to like my fan page.

Simple.

Since I ran 7 ad sets at the same time, I went ahead and added 6 more ads.

Here were the ads:

I wanted to test which ad performed better.

I let them all run for 24 hours, then I kept my winners and dropped the losers.

That let me saved some money by optimizing my campaign.

Side Note: Depending on the daily budget you’re willing to spend, you can start with less or more ads. There is nothing set on stone here. I started out with 7 as I wanted to test different BMW models, angles and body colors to quickly find my winners.

At this point, I had my campaign ready to be launched. I submitted the campaign to Facebook and my ads all went live within 30 minutes.

24 hours later, here was the result:

Ad spend: $7.03
Page Likes: 1,652

Cost per page Like was $0.004 – I was happy with what I got.

I pulled out my ad report, then paused one of the ads that was not performing well and let the rest of them continue to run…

To be honest, even if I didn’t do that, it was no biggie for me.

The average cost per page Like was so cheap that even if one of the ads’ CTR was a little lower than those of the rest, I was still good.

That is the beauty of running Facebook ads in low-competition countries.

At that point I knew 6 ads were working for me.

I created 6 more ad sets, using the same ads that have proven themselves good.

I targeted these additional 6 ads at new countries.

These were mostly developed countries with large English-speaking populations.

For example: the UK, Australia, New Zealand, Germany, UAE, Brunei, Luxemburg, Hong Kong, Singapore, Switzerland, etc.

People in these countries purchase products and services on the Internet just as much as Americans and Canadians do.

These countries were definitely going to cost me more compared to the developing countries that were targeted in my earlier ad sets because there were more advertisers competing for their FB ad inventory.

But the cost is still going to be way lower than what l would pay for the US and Canada inventories.

To recap, I had:

6 ads targeting developing countries
6 ads targeting developed countries

Total: 12 ad sets, each with a $1 daily budget

A day later, I got the following results:

Accumulated ad spend: $19.03
Accumulated page Likes: 3,252

I liked what I saw, so I kept the ads running.

At the end of my 7-day campaign, I had the following results:

Accumulated ad spend: $52.06
Accumulated page Likes: 9,033

Some of my posts got shared by fans and I gained a 1088 more free page likes out of that.

Boom!

10,121 page Likes in just 7 days!

Here is the math:

$52.06 / 10,211 page likes.

That’s an average cost per page Like of $0.005.

That’s about 30 times lower than the average cost per page Like that most marketers can by targeting US niche audiences.

By then, I had a 10K fan base on my BMW fan page.

It was time to regularly post content on the page to drive traffic to my site.

Here are some of my posts in action (each post image linked to my website):

The initial posts that I made on the fan page quickly saw some traffic building up on my website.

The more content I posted on my fan page, the more traffic I was able to drive to my website.

Once the traffic started to build up, I then monetized my website with products and services related to my niche.

You’ve just read about my steps on driving traffic to my website using FB ads for cheap.

Now it’s time for you to put these techniques into practice.

    • Yes, mobile is cheaper for me.

    • Yep! I think so. I not sure but I have already done that and the result is cheaper than other.
  • Good work
  • Wow, That is one awesome and detailed case study. Thanks for sharing this. I am working big with Instagram and actually am working on some case studies myself to post but your great post just gave me the kick I needed to get back to Facebook more, especially Facebook ads.

Your site looks like what I think is native advertising, is this right?

And how would you monetize your site? Would you use places like Taboola or Outbrain? Or Amazon or even Adsense?

    • Mikeyman, sorry I missed your question earlier.

I monetize my site with native ads.

  • The problem with those low tier countries and Adsene is they don't make you any money.
    • [ 1 ] Thanks
    • [2] replies
    • It's not just Adsense alone.

There are so many options for a marketer once we've built up our fan base.

      1. Negotiate for shout-out-for-shout-out deals: we promote other Facebook fan pages, and they promote us.When the other fan page gives us the shout-out in return for ours, both pages get more fans.

      2. Higher page-likes help to boost our FB ad conversion in the future. Most experienced Teespring/Shopify sellers bring up page-likes right before they run any CTW or PPE ads on FB.

      3. Of course, the other model is to monetize your site with networks like Taboola, Content.ad etc.

There are so many things we can do once we have some kind of ''authority'' in the eyes of our audience.

      Hope that make sense

      Verena
      • [ 1 ] Thanks
    • You really need to focus on your prospects. Do you really think that people who are in the country you are marketing in have the resources to buy your product?

Where are the most probable purchases coming from? And what is the population of the area you are marketing to?

These are the kinds of things you need to consider when you market.

  • Hi, great post and will try it for sure!

I have two questions, what was your Potential reach in the two cases? And since I am really new to Facebook adverts I don't understand something. Did you make 7 separate ads(typed everything in again and again) to test those different pictures or you just uploaded 7 pictures which appeared randomly and facebook separates the statistics this way too?

    Thank you!
    • [1] reply
    • I dont remember the ''reach''. It's not crucial to my ad campaign, so didnt pay much attention on it.

I ran all ads at the same time. They're in different ad groups though.

    • Hi,
I am new to Facebook marketing and your article is really awesome!
Do you use CPC or CPM during your campaign?
I tried to get a good CTR on CPC the switched to CPM but the whole thing crashed and I went back to CPC (I only target US, your article opened my eyes).
What is your end goal? You might be selling luxury items so only targeting developing country might not be the whole strategy, do you start with them then switch to developed countries to acquire customer who will pay?
      • [1] reply

  • Wow, Verena, thanks a lot for sharing such a detailed strategy!
It's just step by step and it's clear even for newbies.
I agree that it's wrong to target only US audience. People from developed countries are just banner blind, so such kind of advertising can work better for developing countires.
  • Very cool and very well done.. any idea's on what you will be doing next to monetize this?

    • this is a nice information from V . It does benefit the community here.

In fact once a while I also will be using FB ad to boast my FB page to my site.

what I like is the budget can just set 6 bucks for those low on budget and at least get some audience to notice your page and site.

    • [1] reply
    • I did oCPM. So FB auto adjusted my bid.... Just let them optimize for your campaign. Most of the time, this turn out cheaper for me. I've capped my daily budget though, so I know exactly how much I would spend each day. Hope that helps.

  • Awesome case study! Even if many of these fans aren't buyers, the mere number creates a perception of credibility. This is the greatest advantage I see.
  • Hi Verena. Your FB Ads case study is really great, and though I'm a complete newbie, I understand much of what you're saying. I have a fashion jewellery website in Australia (cybelle.com.au) which I launched about a year ago but I get no sales from this site (currently relying on eBay), and if I get 10 visits in a day, this is a very good day! Do you think your FB Ad system would work for my site, if I targeted ads to Australia and NZ, at least to bring some traffic to my site, and maybe to get some sales as well?
  • What an awesome effort!

I think many people are not realising the value of getting a large number of likes first, even if they are from countries they wouldn't normally target. However, many other people can't believe there are a huge number of English-speaking people who are NOT from the US, Canada, Australia and the UK (SHOCK!), so why wouldn't you target those people for likes? From what i've read, the idea is to build up a lot of likes on your page to give it some credibility first (ie what Scott Brooks said above) before you target the more traditional (read:more expensive CPC) countries like the US, etc. If you were a potential customer, which page would you prefer, one with 141 likes (ie my page that I'm about to have a bit of a FB likes campaign), or one with 10000+ likes?

The only problem I have with this is that even if you get 10K likes (or more) and you post something on your page, I reckon you'd be lucky to get engagement from 1000 "fans", or even have 1000 people see your post. I think FB is purposely doing this so that they can sucker you into paying for "boosting" your post. I boosted a post of mine for around $20. I had about 3K people see it and about 100 liked the post, but not one of them turned around and actually liked the page.

I'm hoping that once I can build up a few more thousand likes on my page, I can post more of our videos from our Youtube channel and that will hopefully get more views!

Oh well, I think advertising the way the OP did is the way to go to build up cheap actual likes (as opposed to Fiverr).

    Well done, Vareena !!
  • I remember some controversy about page likes even from facebook mostly being from "click farms" out of China, Egypt or India. I remember one article (http://www.businessinsider.com/faceb...e-likes-2014-2) where a man got tons of likes that he bought THROUGH FACEBOOK but no engagement afterwards because tons of them were fake clicks by people trying to make fake accounts look legitimate. I'm guessing that facebook must have found a way to stop that based on the engagement you are getting. Do you know anything about this? Has this problem been solved do you know? Any comments would be good to know.
    • [1] reply
  • A very good point. Here is the URL for the video in the news story. Makes you think that advertising on FB is a waste of time for your business, but has FB done anything to combat the "click farms"?

Vareena, with your Facebook advertising campaign, has your engagements for posts been the same, or has there been a noticeable drop? Just curious...

  • Hi,
It's good post, but it is not best example. As I can see, you took subject for your page to bu BMW Fan Club. If you do a little research you can see that that subject (topic) on facebook have millions (10+ millions) likes, followers. So it is very popular subject and response to your ads will be big. So this method is good only for subjects that are very popular, if you choose some other you won't have that much likes. This is good tactic to collect likes and exploit it to some other less popular topic. Other thing, if you choose images from pinterest or other web source, be sure it not require copyright.
    • [1] reply
    • Very good case study. But the topic itself is so popular, people don't mind hitting Like or Share button. Will this strategy work for Health Niche like e.g. Pregnancy and Baby? I doubt it. There will be conversion for sure but very low compared to viral topics like this.

  • In order to get 10,000 facebook fans promote your page more and more so that it reach more and more people and you will get more fans.
  • Few days ago, I tested one advert for $1 and got around 130 likes from the 'albania' group with a reach of 433 so nearly the half as the mentioned reach. Would be a little bit more expensive than yours but still it could be great in long term. My niché has a huge followerbase(lots of millions) yet the reach is getting lower and lower and my 2nd and 3rd ads' likes cost 3-4 times more than the previous. Kept everything the same besides the picture which is always better and better than the first one. Now it is quite expensive even with the "cheap" ad countries, any ideas why could this happen and what to do? Thanks in advance.
  • Great Case Study! Thank you for this!!!
  • Hi Verana, this looks great!
what about your earnings with native ads?
  • Hey Verena, this is a really great post. I had given up on FB ads until I read this post and realized that I was doing everything the wrong way. Thanks a bunch. By the way, what Wordpress Theme is your BMW website using?
    • [1] reply
    • Wow, great article. However, I'm a little confused because this is all still very new to me. First, what is that you actually sell? BMW's? If not then how is the BMW fan page helping you? Second, how does all this cheap, non-U.S. traffic benefit you? Do more fans boost Google rankings?

I'm sorry if my questions seem so juvenile, I'm just trying to figure out how to ramp up my new business/website (TRU-ALLY – It's about people, not keywords) which is a talent advocate company to help people find jobs...in the U.S.

  • I can't find your page on FB?
  • Thanks for the thread. I was wondering....seems to me something like this could only work for a niche that has a visual appeal like cars, skateboarding tricks, accidents, sex, fashion, high-end real estate/makeovers, beauty makeovers/tips, etc.

This way, you could make sales of related products or the products in the pictures themselves. In other words, get traffic for car pictures the convert some of that traffic by selling cars or related things like auto parts.

Do you see any way this method could be used for selling something that is very non-visual and not very sexy but has mass appeal? For instance, web hosting.

    • If your objective is to get traffic to websites, run CTW (click to website) ads on FB. Not Page Like ads like I did.

FB is a social network, it's not a platform to sell product or services. Products like t-shirts and necklace sell well on FB as people are buying on impulse, those are the exceptions. I don't see services like web hosting is going to make serious sales on FB. Run ads on FB users' newsfeed, capture leads, and sell via email. That's the sales process you should structured if your product need some warm up + education. Just my thought.

I don't use tools. I write my post, upload image by hand and post them.

      Hope that helps

  • Hi Verena,

Good post. Quick question though. I noticed on September 11th, 2015, when you created our 8th Ad. Your page had 10,125 Likes. I noticed in the FB widget at the right-part of your website, it shows 10,075 Likes and it's February, 2016, now.

Why would your Page Likes decrease instead of increasing?

    Thank you in advance.
    • [1] reply
    • The FB page hasn't even been updated since September 11, 2015. She hasn't posted anything since doing this campaign...

So then why build a page with 10,000 likes if you don't even use it? Seems like the campaign was created strictly for this forum post.

  • I decided to give this a try over the weekend. I set it up to get likes on a particular post instead of the page to see if it would get similar results.

So I spent $7.99 and got the following results:

738 post likes, 19 page likes, and an increase in likes on other posts on my page.

The odd thing is that the ad manager says I only received 656 post engagements. Regardless, I think this method worked well. I think this could be used to encourage more likes and then you could possibly run a separate campaign to encourage comments.

    Any thoughts on this idea?

I've run a couple of tests over the weekend. My page likes targeting developing countries came out to 0.02$ which is not so bad, however when I switch the audience to developed countries the cost shoot up to 0.20$. How did you get such a cheap likes for the developed countries?

      Thanks.

  • It is time to restart my FB campaign using your strategy. Thanks for the share. It is always much more expensive getting US and Canada visitors in FB.
  • You will surely get this if you spend money... I would be more impressed if it doesn't involve money and you got 10,000 likes.... That's quite impossible, isn't it? Or maybe not.
  • Are you making money from the 10k fans ??
    • [1] reply
    • Maybe it's a glitch in FB like-box widget. I'm not sure.

Usually I don't pay attention to small numbers/things like this.

As long as I'm headig at the right direction and see results I ignore small numbers

      Honestly, I have no idea.

Yes, regardless. Take action and go for it.

As long as the numbers/variances isn't big, I usually don't pay much energy to figure it out. Just my 2 cents.

Maybe you should take a look at your campaign stats.

Different age group, gender, cost you more money, switch those off and your numbers should improve (sometimes a lot of it).

      I'm sorry, I don't get you.

Why do it? Is there any specific reason behind this idea?

  • Wow, very impressive. How did you monetize this traffic? I guess PPV and CPA wouldn't work that well.

I guess you used digital Affiliate Products?

    Kind Regards
  • Nice post. Have you started making good money from this page?
  • I monetize my site with native ads.

    They look like this:

    • Do you mind me asking how much revenue on average/day native ads generate?
  • Great info! Funny, I was just looking for ways to boost my FB likes for a number of sites that I have. Thanks!
  • Very Cool, and very detailed. Good job! Whatever it takes to build up the a good Facebook audience. This wouldn't work for me, but for a fan page I could see how it could pay off.
  • Verena, very nice case study. I see your fan page is not catering particularly to businesses. For someone trying to build a B2B service page would you recommend to use desktop ads as well as mobile ads?
    • [1] reply
    • We don't know till we test.

Every interest, age group, gender is different. It's not easy to predict which works.

When I ran PPE ads in another niche, I assumed older folks (50 and above) were on Desktop more than mobile. I was wrong. I ended up spending more on mobile as I could reach a larger audience using mobile ads.

To answer you question: yes, first run on desktop and mobile. Once you have some data, you'll know what to do next. It's test test test when it comes to buying traffic on Facebook.

  • Thank you for posting this thread. I am very successfull with Twitter & Instagram but never succeeded with Facebook and i learned a couple of new things by reading this thread.

I am going to try different campaigns today and see how it goes, you made me understand Facebook a bit better. Again, thank you!

    • Once we place multiple ads within an adset, Facebook will rotate ads automatically and then serve the best performing ad for us. This way, I have no control over my ads serving, I don't like it.

I prefer to do it manually: 1 ad in each adset. Let them run to collect data, pull out stats, and then decide my winners/losers. I used to do this for awhile and works well for me.... though I have to spend a few minutes reading stats and manually stop the losers.

There is no "right" or "wrong" way of doing it. I just prefer it this way

  • Done some experimentation on my side.
India cost quite a lot (0.10) compared to others (ex:Nepal 0.02).
The first time I ran for cheap countries I got something like 400 likes for 3$ no optimisation (lazy ). Not that hard, then I started to go for my niche with less "useless" cheapest countries (ex: Nepal) cost went up a about 100 likes for 3$.
I would love to know what are your CPC for T1 like UK,US. And what is the percentage of them in your fans.
I was noobly thinking that mixing low Tiers with T1 would get me low CPC because a lot of the cheap countries click on it so maybe Facebook would think it's awesome and lower the cost for the expensive one.
  • I just started targeting some developing countries for a fitness related page, and the cost per page like is pretty good.

I'm getting around a 15% CTR with an (automatic) CPM of $11. This comes out to 6c page likes, which considering the competitive market, is pretty good.

I'm considering dropping the CPM because $11 seems absurdly high, but I'll have to make sure my CTR doesn't drop alongside it.

Overall, good results so far (ads have only been running for an hour), and we'll see what happens.
  • That's great.
  • Thats cool and little tricky. I am not sure if same will work for me but worth to put a try.
  • That is one awesome and detailed case study. Thanks for sharing this.
  • it is superior guidance thanks to describe with perfectness.
  • Great post! But it really depends on your niche and the way you monetize your website. If you have Adsense, then yes..it's ok to get clicks from any country. For example I promote informational products on Clickbank which are quite expensive and 95% of the sales come from US and Canada. People in poor countries will not pay 37$ for an ebook.

Even in your case (I see that you promote stuff from Amazon)...how many sales do you get from countries like Bangladesh, Uganda, Tanzania or Zimbabwe?

Those kind of likes are good to have just for image and ego. It looks better to have 10,000 likes (all countries) than to have just 1,000 US only likes.
    • [1] reply
    • This is 100% completely wrong. If you have 10,000 likes from other countries and those likes provide ZERO engagement with your content, they are worth less than what 1000 highly-engaged US likes would provide.

Folks, please, read up on (and understand) the relationship between Likes, Engagement, and Reach. If you don't understand this relationship, avoid Facebook as an advertising/traffic platform - you are going to fail.

      Facebook Engagement vs Reach

  • Hey Verena, this is a really great post, maybe i can use Facebook for teespring. i dont understand why your cost is so low ? 0.001$ Why you are targeting only mobile? Cause they are cheaper?
  • Oldest trick in the book. Problem is that the traffic you are getting with such low CPC, you will get low earning as well with ads. Can you share a screenshot with us to prove that at the end of the day your method is profitable?
  • I've enjoyed reading it, thanks for sharing!

  • Everybody is asking one question.
What do you do with this strategy? You switched to developed countries but didn't put numbers on this (% of fans, engagement, cost , etc).
Did switching to developed increased your cpc (how much)? Is this enough to drive real sales after or do you have another method?
After some time I stopped targeting some countries, Bangladesh click bank is good for social proof but a waste of money for engagement.
It's like there is a void in your article, basically what is next?
    • [ 1 ] Thanks
    • [1] reply
    • Actually, while the techniques sound pretty good and I'm sure they work, it seems to be 100% dependent on subject matter.

In this case, the subject is BMW, which is already a well established brand and already has a ready niche : car and BMW fans.

What about start-ups? Say, someone who is selling a new brand of t-shirts, or a new company providing a new type of courier service?

I highly doubt this sort of approach will work.

  • Great post Verena, I think it goes to show that anybody out there can gain a following on Facebook with little investment.

I especially like how instead of just having a basic advert with your page you pose people the question. Love BMW? then like our page as it gets people thinking about BMW's (and as you are targeting the interests) and there is a targeted call to action.

  • What I don't understand about this "case study" is why is OP not growing the page? If this strategy of collecting non-US "Likes" is so effective, why would you get a page to 10K "likes" and then just stop doing anything with it??

I get that this was used as an example but even if it was, why wouldn't OP continue growing it?

As far as I can tell (from what I've seen and read so far), this is a great case study on how NOT to build a fan page. With 10K fans, this page should be driving INSANE traffic (and profits with it). Why is that not happening here?

If it was, OP would surely continue growing it, no?
    • [1] reply
    • I am using this as a case study to show folks this method works with relatively low budget. But BMW is not a niche I'm passionate about...It's not just money, when it comes to building something, I want to do what I enjoy doing. I have success in other niches I enjoy doing, just not automobile.

  • This is a really good post that shows how to get an account up to the point where people trust you. I can verify this works.
  • Thanks for sharing, problem with facebook is this, they can ban you anytime for no reason and if that happens there is nothing you can do, I had multiple fan pages with 1000's of likes, followers and it was great till that day when I got banned......till today I have no idea why so I stopped using FB, thanks anyway.
    • [4] replies
    • That's very interesting but I hear it a lot these days. One main problem I have seen why people get banned is that they use automated software to post to their fan pages. If you do this too frequently within a certain time span, this could get you banned from what I have been reading.

Even though they were doing nothing malicious and just using automated software to help free up time and make life easier, they still get the boot.

You are right, you have to be very careful when using sites you have no control over for traffic. Putting all or even most your eggs in one basket is a recipe for disaster. You have to diversify everything these days.
    • So you don't know why you was banned from Facebook? You must have been doing something crazy to get banned because I had my fanpage for a few years and nothing has happened. I don't use automated systems to post and others are doing well also! You must have used something wrong and it caught you in the worst way...
    • Why would they ban you for no real reason? Just for running multiple ads? They only ban people for real reasons but we enjoy saying that "it wasant my fault" excuse becsause we dont take the time to read and learn about their terms and conditions and ad placement regulations, guidelines and restrictions.
      • [ 1 ] Thanks
    • Facebook pretty much lay down everything on what advertisers can do and what not to do here on their ad policy page.

Advertisers are not allowed to run ads on certain verticals like dating, dietary supplements, casino, subscription services etc. If you run ads in those niches, your ad account will be ban. I guess affiliates got ban running ads in those CPA niches.

Facebook doesn't ban advertisers for "no reason". If we make small mistakes (like not comply to their 20%-text-policy) they will send us an email notification and our ad just won't go live. That's it. They won't ban us straight. Just resubmit a new ad and our ad will get approve.

      Hope that helps.

      Verena
  • Did you set your ads as automatic in the bidding or did you choose to pay by impressions, clicks or automatic by click? or automatic by impressions?

    Thanks!
  • Excellent case study.. And I would also like to mention that, getting some organic likes is highly beneficial.. Look out for some viral videos or stuff related to your niche on Reddit or YouTube. And you can just "Boost Post" to leverage from these 10k fans

  • Hi Verena.
  • Hi Verena. This was an awesome study. Would just like to know if you had a target audience here or just to gain likes, what was the ultimate lead goal here? I need people in my state to like our page as our products can not be sold overseas so having people from around the world liking our page feels like it will only help the responsiveness of my page?
    • [1] reply
    • Gain likes, gain traffic.

In your case, you'll only run Facebook ads to people within your state.

      Verena
  • Hi Verena. Very nice post! I would just like to know what was the objective of growing the likes for your page? I'm in the same market but my objective is to get more leads through from my page so I assume that this means I have to only get like from my area as we do not sell our products overseas?
    • [1] reply
    • The objective is to gain likes, gain traffic and build social proof fast.

If your primary objective is to get leads, don't run Page Likes campaigns on FB. Run other campaigns just like I've shared on my post here

Apart from Page Likes campaigns, we have lots of other options with FB ads, run those campaigns if you're trying to get leads for your business.

      Hope that helps.

  • I'm not sure why I can't set my budget to USD1 though. They mentioned that the minimum is USD5. Anyone facing the same problem?
    • [1] reply

    • It's due to Facebook changing the default option for how they charge you. When creating ad set, the old default was Impressions (CPM). The new default is "Page Like'' or CPC.

You can change back to Impressions (CPM) in the Optimization & Pricing section at the bottom of the Ad Set editor in Power Editor.

This will allow you to set the $1 daily minimum budget again.

      Hope that helps.

  • I'm really impressed. Nice job.
  • Really great work....
  • Great post ! But recently, some fanpage posting about : Giveaway Mercedes car, BMW, etc... It require you have to like and share that fanpage. Then they realize they have been SCAM. Beware !!
  • You did a really a hard work. Thank you for your useful sharing. As I am a newcomer here, so it is quite hard for me to dig into FB marketing. But with your sharing, I can now understand more about its mechanism..
  • This is a science that is precious to me, thank you very much
  • Yea I have that same problem. The min is 5 dollars a day now.
  • This is a nice case study, learned alot...
  • Very nice, glad to see some one actually taught us social media marketing

One simple question, does facebook click rates are all depend on niche? there`s a sheer difference between luxury cars and other nice products? is that true?
    • [1] reply
    • The cost of Facebook ads depends on:

      1. Targeting
The more targeted your ads are, the more you have to pay. If you were to run ads to all cars, then you will pay less.

As you narrow down your targeting, such as gender, location, interest (a specific BMW fan page) – the ad price goes up.

      2. Bids
If one advertiser is willing to pay $0.10, then the next advertiser will pay more – so it's $0.11 for the click.

      3. Engagement
Facebook rewards engagement. Your ad price will go down if your ad gets clicked 1/10, vs the other advertiser whose ad only get clicked 1/50 times. That’s for Page Like campaign.

When you’re running Page Post Engagement campaigns, engagement includes: like, comment, share and click on your post.

      Hope that helps.

    • Buy stock photos.

You can get high quality stock photos free though. Just Google up ''free stock photo websites''.
  • Great post and information Verena, thank you! btw, I tried this technique, and it works but it seems that 99% of my traffic is coming from 1 country. What do you think I am doing wrong? Thanks again!
    • [1] reply
    • Facebook will optimize your ads. They will show your ads to the audience in countries who is most engaging with your ad.

If you don't like how it works, this is what you can do is: set up one country in each ad set.

This method costs you more money to start as you'll be running more adsets. You can pause the losers after some initial tests though.

  • 10K likes at a FB page for $52. Woooow! Incredible!

At FB ads, developing countries are cheaper than advanced countries.

Verena, I will try to lower the cost like you.

If anyone is living at a developing country, can try this method. Then promote local merchandise at the developing country.
