Can Social Media be the real positive change in the world?

I'm currently writing my dissertation on the above questions. I want to see whether you feel that social media has the right power to give people new perspectives, outlooks on today's very tragic times. We are so used to being fed information that's very singular, I believe social media is slowly changing this.

What do you think?

It could be, but it won't.

The only people (it seems) using social media these days are the one's with too much time on their hands.

Those are the last people I want shaping and molding the world.

Have you been on Facebook lately? Nothing positive about it.

Even Twitter has been accused of being full of "basement dwelling neckbeards" these days.

      Yeah, I most definitely agree.

It had the potential to do some good, but I guess as people - we can't have nice things.

What about the Facebook feature of 'Safety Check'? That seems to be helping a lot of affected people...

I'd say it has done the exact opposite. Not all the time and not always, but I don't ever remember people being so divided before. I think social media, the 24 hour news cycle and celebrity culture are all part of the problem.

To change the world is a big topic but it can have some good impacts. Although I believe a lot of people on it constantly are the ones with extra time on their hands. The general public can make differences but minor effects without support.

It can be. However we should be careful of the spamming and fake accounts that is very popular on most social media sites lately.

Absolutely not. Social media is being used to promote a culture of ignorant belligerence. Intellectual pursuits are dismissed in favor of junk science, freedom dismissed in favor of safe spaces/censorship, and truth dismissed in favor of sensationalism. "War is peace, Freedom is Slavery, Ignorance is Strangth". We live in a very Orwellian culture, and social media has played a part in cultivating it.

Depends how you look at it. It may be better for some people but not for all.

It can be, but it can be the opposite as well. It all depends on a persons perception on things. Some people are just negative all the time even on social media.

Just like in real life associate with positive people on social media and it can be a very positive experience.

I love social media. like any communication medium, it comes with its ups and downs, pros and cons. Overall, i really believe it makes the world a more robust place in many ways. It additionally provides a platform to some less savory behaviors and opinions. Every to his/her own, I believe.

It depends on the purpose of using it , so it can be positive , for example business owners can communicate with each other easily and also to get a feedback on product or services, however it depends on the goal.
