Facebook just pulled a new huge douche move

I manage a pretty substantial facebook page (2.8m+ followers) and we have good, consistent engagement on our posts. Well, at least we did until the last week or so.

After years of never spending a dime on facebook, we made a fool strategic move to 'boost' one of our recent posts, and have subsequently done the same for about 5 more.

Since doing this, however, I've noticed a HUGE drop off of engagement on all our other content.

Just to put in perspective - we're getting only 20 shares on a post where we normally average 1000+.

Now, I know I probably am sounding paranoid here, it's just such a massive and noticeable change, and at the risk of sounding cynical I can't help but wonder if we've somehow tripped some switch by paying for content that has now led to facebook algorithm reducing reach on our posts in order to force us into paying more.

Facebook wouldn't be the first ones to do this, nor the last. Yelp is pretty succesfull
at extorting its clients.

I'd love to hear if anyone else has experienced anything similar to this?

Thank you all

Huh, anything is possible. I also think Facebook behaves very fishy and I don't like their whole mentality, but nowadays you can't do sh** without it. I posted a post of item I sell in a Facebook group, which had 2k followers. The response was awesome and I made more than a few sales, so I wanted to try payed adds and the results were very disappointing, although I targeted the right keywords. Reach was okay (for example, the same as in the group I posted), but it didn't convert to any clicks and sales, which is very weird O.o. Also got a fishy feeling.

Probably it didn't convert because it was proven again and again by researchers that the "Facebook reach" metric is completely fake and doesn't mean a thing in reality...

I wouldn't put it past Facebook to do something that forces you to hand them money to be honest. Are you still noticing the effect?

I am a newbie, but I have been doing "research" before launching my own venture and I have actually noticed in the last week or so a lot of drop offs in content sharing/engagement on many of the "viral" pages I follow.

For instance I follow I F*cking love science and have noticed normally they get roughly 4-5000 shares and 15k + likes and it seems to me its dropped to anywhere around 800-1000 shares and only 5k likes now...

I am also wondering what the hell is going on.

I manage 1.5 million fans on FB and this week something is just plain WRONG on facebook. Our reach and engagement has never been lower. We have always advertised and boosted some posts for years, so I'm sure you didn't tripped any switch. Facebook simply implemented a new algorithm last week to "fix" Timeline clutter. They say that there's more content being published than what users are able to see, so they just show the "best" content only. We have always managed to do great with videos and photos. Now they don't get anywhere near as 1/4 of the exposure they used to get a few months ago. You are not alone my friend, all Page owners/managers are FURIOUS. We all feel betrayed by Mr. Zuckerberg.

In the meantime, I am running ALL types of experiments in my pages. So far, I've found that if a page has had good/fair engagement in most posts, then stories are more likely to show up in more people's feeds. This is why pages need to be focused to a specific niche. Broader niche pages will get hammered the most as per my experiments.

    Best of Luck mate.

Thank you for your input. So, as we feared, it's a wider problem with many implications.

Soon we will probably come to the conclusion that the best solution
is to just simply focus on a different social network.

Yup, gotta say I have seen the same in the last week.
I manage a few local, smaller accounts, I haven't been selling nor advertising, just given out pure engaging posts for my fans. And reach was killed within 1 or 2 days.

It is getting harder and harder to stand out on social media. Gotta love the challenge tho!

The reach on Twitter increased, while on Facebook collapsed. Not all social networks are created equally.

FB = You don't pay you don't get traffic.

    Period.

They've been doing some pretty bad updates, they're basically destroying FB from the inside and I'm not even sure their vision was the same as they first started this billion dollar website.

Can you even begin to imagine what they will do with full Virtual Reality Oculus data? Body tracking, how long you glare at an item, eye tracking, eye sight measuring, weight (think of the opportunity with those metrics right there), sample products delivered to your home after you glared at them for too long in the virtual shop etc. Scary but strangely exciting.

I wish they'd tell us, but their vision is, "it's our baby, we raise it how we want"! Unfortunately we all have to dance to their wallet emptying tune
