Pinterest is dead for affiliates

I guess I'm the first person to notice the most recent Pinterest changes. There are two of them that will sound the death knoll for affiliates using Pinterest.

1. As you may already know, they outlawed affiliate links in pins some time ago. However, I managed to work around this by linking to a post on my website that has the affiliate link. But now that's impossible due to their new policy on Universal Pin Descriptions: "Pins now have descriptions that are created automatically from a variety of sources, rather than being limited to a personal note from the original Pinner." Sounds like all pins with the same picture will have the same description, so there won't be any way to individualize a pin with a link to your website!

2. The other horrible change: New Repin Counts: "Pinterest now counts repins and likes on a piece of content throughout all of Pinterest, instead of just showing the counts for a specific Pin." Now when I post a pin, I will have no idea how it's being received by my readership. How will I know whether to put up more pins like this one, or delete this one? And I will also lose the ability to optimize a board by placing my popular pins near the top.

Finally, from a personal point of view, I resent having Pinterest provide a description of my picture for me - especially if it's MY PICTURE!

I am not an expert Affiliate marketer but I think for Affiliate marketing Facebook is the best place. If you can use Facebook effectively, then you will be able to make good amount of money. I usually spend small amount of money on Facebook Ads and promote my product to targeted audience only.

  • Erm, Pinterest is not really a popular platform compared to Facebook and Twitter, unless you are lucky to have built a large number of followers there. I agree, Facebook is one of the popular options BUT you need to check first a strategy on how to get around some glitches when posting affiliate links.

In our experience, we once tried posting affiliate links for a popular weight loss product by masking the link in a new domain name and have it redirected. However, Fb still tracked it down and disabled posting it, so it didn't serve us well.

Pinterest was not designed as affiliates.

Pinterest has different thing to offer.
