Email Marketing vs. Social Media

Have you see the latest Terminator movie? Well, you don't have to worry about spoiler alerts, because you aren't going to find them here. However, you should know that Arnold Schwarzenegger just got himself a new immortal Terminator line. He's old, but he isn't obsolete. What's that supposed to mean and more importantly, what it has to do with our email marketing v social media story? Well, it has a lot.

Still Alive and Kicking
We live in the world ruled by social media. We aren't going to even try to question this well-known fact. Yet, the good old emails have a simple, but quite an effective message for all of us: We're old, but we're definitely not obsolete. If you think that this battle between social media and email marketing is over before it even started, we have a handful of reasons to prove you all wrong.

It goes without saying that we're all using social networks much more than we've ever used emails. However, it's also true that social media we often associate with the fun and less official pleasurable moments in our life. On the other hand, we have emails, which are still a synonym for business communication and a more desirable professional approach. In addition, social media channels are all about heavy and unparalleled exposure. This can benefit a lot to your marketing campaign, but it can also bring a lot of undesirable attention. With email marketing, you can simply forget about these troubles.

Email Is Still A Popularity Contest Winner
This may come as a huge surprise to you, but email is still more popular when it comes to the number of people who're using on a daily basis compared to social networks. When it comes to our emails, we tend to protect them more carefully. If you can get someone's attention through an email, then you can certainly achieve a lot. On the other side, we have to admit that we're under a constant heavy information bombardment while using social networks that we hardly notice something of relevant business importance. Reading an email is still more intimate and a direct experience compared to social media where one "like" doesn't mean that he or she will sign for your services or buy your product.

Business v Fun
People use Facebook to share family photos and discuss fun moments. That's why some of your users won't be thrilled to get a new business offer on their Facebook page. If you think that we're exaggerating, we have a simple counter-question for you. Why do you have and run both Facebook and LinkedIn profile pages, if your Facebook isn't all about fun and family?

It's also totally wrong to say that you shouldn't use social media for your marketing campaigns. Yet, you should also accept an inevitable true that your social network will still have to accept a sidekick's role compared to good old marketing superhero called - the email.

  • If you're serious about marketing, you really can't afford to neglect either one. It's not really a question about which one is better. It's about using all the tools at your disposal to reach your audience.

Communication is important for any business but positive engagement with the customer base can really lead to improved reputation. Social allows brands and user to interact freely and quickly.

Great information. I still prefer email marketing as the best source to drive traffic to your website or blog as compared to social media. Though they are great but not as great as email marketing.

Both are important. You have to be sociable in order to gain clients. E-mail marketing is also important since it's the easiest form of marketing.

Social Media traffic should be directed to your landing page, whereby your form will be ready to capture their email address.

    Social Media >> Email Marketing

    They work in tandem.

Both work better. Because on social media you get the attention by providing value or sharing something interesting and from their you have to catch the email through webform and again from here you have to reprovide value through email to make your customer. So both works better and can be lucrative if done in strategic way.

Great information! Email marketing is a better way to get into conversations. The people on your mail list already know you and trust you or else they would not have given you your email address. Social media is geared more towards sharing information with friends.

The two (social media and email) compliment each other greatly when done right. Comparing the two is an apples to oranges comparison though.

I share everything that I write on Facebook, all my contacts know what I do for a living and my motive is to genuinely help them in the area that I wrote about, hopefully they can glean a new trick or tip that will help their business.

Great article on the subject! Thanks for sharing!

    Peace,

Good points. I believe that both are useful when it comes to digital marketing. There are other people that doesn't have social media but does have an email address and vice versa. So it's better to practice enhancing knowledge on doing email and social media marketing.
