Help me promote my YouTube channel (1-minute economics lessons)

1) Keep building backlinks using Fiverr like sercices, so you get better rank.
2) Reditt don't allow you to share Youtube link, but you have many more social sites to share it, like Tumblr.
3) You can use paid traffic such as GooglesAdword. By this way you can promote your video to other related videos.

More than anything else, Youtube is a social network. Networking with owners of popular channels in the same niche is the best and fastest way to grow your own channel.

Create playlists using a mix of your own videos as well as popular videos on the same topic. I generally like to put a very popular video first, then my own, followed by other popular quality videos. Also, when a popular channel first posts a video, use it in a playlist.

You can use playlists to help network with other channel owners and playlists can and do rank in the Youtube search results. Optimize your playlist titles and descriptions as you would an individual video. Note that playlists don't use tags.

I checked you most popular videos and they seem to be focused on inflation/deflation so I'd start by making more videos about them.

Focus on making more videos so that New people who subscribe will know that you are constantly uploading new videos, no one likes to subscribe to a dead channel, and you can of course later on buy some paid services to help rank your YouTube videos higher, but for now, it's best to focus on creating and uploading videos, you never know, some of them may go viral, and the traffic will expand into your less viral videos.

Focus on keyword research and going after keywords with lots of traffic low competition. And make sure your video details are properly optimized.

Create a fanpage, very important for becoming more popular on youtube.

Thanks for the tips guys, here's an update, perhaps other YouTubers will find my experience useful.

My bitcoin video has done very well on Reddit: it was on page one of the /r/bitcoin subreddit (~180k members), of the /r/btc and /r/cryptocurrency ones (~20k members each) and most importantly on /r/videos which is huge, with about 11 million members.

The total view count of that video is now slightly over 5,500 whereas before doing well on Reddit, it was at barely over 100.

I now have 311 channel subscribers, not huge by any means but the channel is growing.

Still, I wish I had other traffic sources such as Reddit, not a huge fan of putting all of my eggs in the same basket.

Well, I sure woke up to some good news

Yesterday, the latest video on my One Minute Economics channel started doing well on Reddit, on the huge /r/videos subreddit (about 11 million members). It's still there, on page 2.

Before that happened, I was sitting at 370-371 subscribers and was optimistic that I might get close to 400 thanks to Reddit.

Well, I went to bed and woke up to a whopping 465 subs

I have done well on /r/videos before with my bitcoin video but it seems this video (which explained what pyramid schemes and Ponzi schemes are) generated a LOT more subscribers for the same number of views.

The only two explanations I can think of:

1) they found the video more interesting than the bitcoin one

2) I'm now posting two times per week, so the channel looks more active

Definitely the best 24 hours the channel has had... by far.

Just think of it like ranking a website. Try to find keywords that people are searching for, create a video for it and then rank them. That's how I do it and got some nice success!

Well, I've managed to break my previous Reddit "record" (100 YouTube subscribers in ~24 hours) by attracting ~150 subs over a 24-hour period with my video about derivatives.

The main difference between this situation and the other one is this: for my previous record, I've done very well on just ONE huge subreddit (/r/videos, with 11 million members, genuinely huge) whereas the derivatives video did well on several smaller subreddits.

It definitely adds up, especially since you can get good placement on the smaller subreddits. I end up on position #1 of page #1 on smaller subreddits relatively frequently, whereas my best performance on /r/videos has been the last position (#25) of page one. Now, of course, I could receive insane amounts of traffic by hitting position #1 of page #1 on /r/videos (easily hundreds of subs, possibly 500+) but that's easier said than done and therefore, if I were to aim for consistency, targeting smaller subreddits kind of makes more sense.

The channel now has close to 800 subs, so "the big 1k" is close.

Do you optimise the end of your videos to encourage subscriptions?
I'm sure you've seen that many users have 'end cards' where they will say, "thanks for watching, if you enjoyed this video hit subscribe" blah blah. The fact you're scheduling videos on a regular basis is great too, viewers love to know when to next 'check in'.
Make subscription easy! Buttons, CTAs etc.

Another tip I would give is to make more content on what has proved popular and you can even make it a 3 parter vids to cover one subject - For example, Covering [subject]...Part 1' ...This encourages people to come back to watch the 2nd and 3rd installments.

I would also start optimising your channel with playlists in sub categories, you want to be hitting YTs most important ranking factor - Watch Time (Link to ReelSEO)

Interesting to read your thread and your strategy since I am myself thinking about creating a youtube-channel. Have you come in contact and gotten featured on any other youtube-channels?

That must surely be one of the most 'sure' ways of getting both impressions and click-throughs to your own channel?

I think you should promote your YouTube channel through paid advertisement that will help you more...

The Billboard - Just in California, The Los Angeles freeway system handles over 12 million cars on a daily basis. That's a lot of eyeballs.The Restroom - The average person urinates at a frequency of 7 times a day, for an average duration of 30 seconds making it an obvious opportunity for strategic advertising. Word of Mouth - Because of the personal nature of the communications between individuals, there is an added level of credibility. Corrupting the Youth - It's critical to infiltrate people's minds and hearts at an early age, when they are most susceptible to influence. Going International - The USA is less than 5% of the world's population - so it's important to reach out and develop an international audience. What better way than to physically send a message.

Here we are, 8 days later, and I've hit 1,000 YouTube subscribers!!!

I have to say, Reddit has been good to me over the past month or so, will be interesting to see what happens next. I think attracting another 1,000 YouTube subscribers within 45 days is an achievable goal, I'll do my best to make that happen.

The channel just passed the "1,500 subs" milestone, got 500 subs in two weeks.

Well, two weeks and 2-3 days to be more precise but still, not bad at all.

I'm working really hard on the channel these days, posting two videos each and every week: one on Tuesday and one on Saturday.

Most of the subs come from Reddit and while I know a lot of YouTubers raise an eyebrow whenever someone mentions Reddit (their users have a reputation of not always being very polite... to put it mildly), Redditors have been very good to me for the most part.

Have some of the comments been about how much I suck? Yes. But most of the feedback (the overwhelming majority) has been positive and/or constructive.

Quick update: currently at 2,720 subs and I need your help with something.

As an economist, I have to say I've hated the debate. They've spent about as much time discussing economics as they've spent talking about tabloid-type issues such as Obama's birth certificate. Interest rates are at record-low levels, central banks are pumping unprecedented amounts of liquidity into the system, the global economy is dealing with unbelievably complex problems... yet politicians still prefer tabloid-ish topics. Go figure.

Use different social media channels to promote your videos and communicate with your audience to know what they are actually looking for and what you can add in your videos to get more engagement.
Create a Facebook page, use Instagram, Twitter to post your sites and interact with your audience.

Great news, my YouTube.com/OneMinuteEconomics channel now has 3,000 subscribers!!!

It started as a hobby but it seems the project is turning into *so* much more. At the very beginning, I wanted to maybe publish a video per month or so and used to dream about how awesome it would be if the channel had 100 videos: well, I'm already halfway there (49 videos) and instead of publishing once a month, I'm now posting two videos each week (one on Tuesday and one on Saturday).

It isn't easy... but I'm loving every minute of it! The channel now has lots of videos (spread across multiple well-categorized playlists), an awesome community is starting to emerge (I mean come on, I've published two videos about the election and the comments have been more than civilized, which is very... and I mean *very* rare) and most importantly, I feel the channel is genuinely helping more and more people.

Well, enough with the rambling already, time to get back to work!

Well, here we are, a year or so later and I've just (as in yesterday) celebrated the 10,000 subscriber milestone!!!

Thought I'd update this thread and share some of the stuff I've learned over the past 12-13 months as a YouTuber.

1) First of all, YouTube can be very, very supportive

My animations are great but let's be honest, the production value of my filmed videos is not... not yet, at least; I've always been insecure about actually filming myself because while I use my written English a LOT more than I use my native language (emails, blog posts,articles, books, you name it), the same cannot be said about my spoken English. I was kind of afraid I'd disappoint people but YouTube has been awesome; so awesome in fact that at a certain point, I took a close look at the analytics for:

a) my 10 most recent animations

b) my 10 most recent vlogs/filmed videos

It turns out the animations had pretty much the same number of likes as the blogs but... brace yourself... the vlogs had pretty much no dislikes. Which is ridiculous in light of how incompetent I know I am at lighting stuff, video stuff, talking in front of a camera (my accent is getting better but I'm still not satisfied) and there can only be one explanation: the community wants to support what I'm doing and in their quest for authenticity (compared to the talking heads on financial news networks, for example), they're willing to be lenient when it comes to things like production value

2) My audience is ridiculously diverse, from high school and college kids to Bank of England seniors, I kid you not; I've actually just recently (a couple of days ago) exchanged emails with a BOE dude who was very humble/polite and wanted my opinion on one of their new projects

3) The money, unless you're genuinely huge, is not going to be amazing compared to domaining, cryptocurrency investing and so on; if you're not doing it out of passion and instead are chasing money, there are better ways to skin that cat

4) Having your own product helps a LOT; perhaps the biggest positive surprise was the sales of my book's (Wealth Management 2.0) audiobook version... it's a huge advantage that I'll be able to earn additional income by selling products (books) that my audience is actually interested in rather than merch such as shirts, mugs and so on

5) I've recently started having a few very loyal fans, I've even had my first "first" comment on a YouTube video and my first "second" comment... first/second comments are a YouTube thing (). I don't take these people for granted and always do my best to engage with my audience. My rule of thumb is that replying to comments is not just the polite but also the smart thing to do. It remains to be seen how this will change once the comment volume keeps increasing but I'll do my best

6) There's a LOT of work behind the scenes and videos which seem simple to make involve far more blood/sweat/tears than meets the eye. For example, my easiest-to-make videos are the rants I publish on Monday but even with those, I usually spend over an hour just recording myself for a minute or so of footage. Then there's also editing, finding/introducing images, publishing the thing , etc.

7) At the beginning, just like with most projects I guess, it does tend to feel that you're talking to yourself; it takes just as much time writing let's say a script for an animation now when I'm at 10k+ subs as it did when I barely had 10 subscribers and the same way, the same principle will be value at 100k subs compared to 10k; the "am I talking to myself here?" phase is perhaps the hardest

Well, time for a quick 2018 update: I haven't had time to work on the channel over the past month but fortunately, since most of my traffic comes from search and recommendations rather than fresh content, my views and subscriber count are doing quite well.

Currently at a little over 17,000 subscribers, growing at slightly above 1,000 per month.

Aside from that, I'm fairly frequently contacted by people who want to use my videos for education purposes:

1) professors at a handful of universities are already using my videos

2) some videos are being included in documentaries, including a very recent one that will appear on national television in Holland

As of next month, I'll do my best to publish fresh videos more frequently, probably one or two per week.

I'll also be launching my second book in early spring, it's about financial calamities: how to prepare for them and how to be more financially resilient in general. I've already soft launched it by telling my email subscribers about the book and people seem to really like it.

If any of you guys want a free copy, post in this thread or PM me and I'd gladly give you one.

1. Using keywords as a name of your video.
2. Promote your link through social media like facebook, instagram and twitter.
3. Email marketing is also a good option you can make a list and send email to user which is having your channel link and give call to action button in your email to subscribe your channel.

Hi economist, I am following this thread as I too wish to create a channel. Congratulations on your success! This has been very educational for me. I have a video production and acting background but no real passion, kind of your opposite!

Anyway, if you happen to have the time and can share info related more specifically to how you promote your channel (ie. Keyword/tag examples, and reddit post examples) I would greatly appreciate it. If you need video production related tips, let me know!
