Help finding the right hashtags for Facebook and Twitter.

I'm starting out as a freelance marketer. And I've got to be honest, I'm not that big on social media marketing. I definitely need to learn more about it.


Anyway, I post a lot of social media content relating to marketing and business in general. What I want to know is how I can go about finding the most appropriate hashtags?


Before I posted here I did some googling. It led me to a few websites, but none of them really give me what I was looking for.

For example, I just posted a small article on the power of positive thinking for being successful. What's the best way to go about finding appropriate hashtags for that?

    This is a great question.

    I manage a variety of social media accounts and it can get quite draining trying to come up with new and innovative hashtags. So for that reason, I don't!

    I try to bring my common sense into play and just use the hashtags that are logical to me, and that I'd use if I were searching for something. I tend to find that it then comes pretty easily to me.

    I also keep a regular eye on my competitors/influencers and check out what they're doing. Not with the view of copying but with the view of seeing what is successful for them. I think if you're crediting someone with any new ideas, as social media allows you to do very easily, it's OK to learn from others.

    I also use a site called hashtagify.me which allows you to put in your required subject and brings up the top 10 hashtag suggestions. I just typed in 'power of positive thinking' in relation to your article and it came up with the following:

    #lawofattraction
    #mindovermatter
    #thepositivequote
    #thoughtsbecomethings
    #truth
    #success
    #speakitanditwillbeso

    The top 10 are just for the free version but you can also use get a paid subscription which will give you 30 for each subject (the maximum allowed for Instagram). If you're managing a few accounts, this might be worth it as it can be time-consuming thinking of and creating hashtags for many different pages.

    They say that long-tailed hashtags unique to you and/or your business are a good way to go too, they generate interest and also create a point of difference.

    Good luck with that, I too would love to hear any suggestions that people have as it's something I struggle with too!

      I take the same approach as you do when I do use hashtags. However, what seems logical to us and what is popular on social media could often be very, very different. ;-)


      I tried using hashtagify.me before making my original post. I think I put in something like "positive thinking". It did not come up with anything. I might've just been a mistake. Maybe I needed to reload the page.


      Is slightly off-topic but, still relevant. Like said, I'm not a social media buff. I see people who have upwards of four and five hashtags per post. I have read that 2 to 3 is the appropriate amount. Does anyone have any thoughts on that?

        Personally I use hashtags as a way of drawing in the viewers and with Instagram I generally go up to the maximum of 30 (add them as the first comment so you don't get penalised for using too much text in your description).

    There are many website where you can find popular and relevant hashtags on a particular niche. But I will suggest use your own mind and add relevant hashtags that fit best to your content. You can also use keywords, location, your hashtags should highlight your post.
