How to monetize a Tumblr blog?

Hello everyone,

I have a Tumblr that has 43k followers and it just occurred to me today to look into adding ads or something. I'm not even sure if it's worth doing but if it is, what are some ways to do it? The blog is a collection of NSFW images in a very specific niche. Could I use an adult ad network? Should I put up ads for affiliate products? I'm new at all of this so any help would be appreciated. Thanks!

Hey Chris. I'm not sure if Tumblr allows ads or not. Like adsense and stuff, but you could do is find some adult cpa offers. There are lots of Pay Per Lead offers for adult webcam sites and hook up sites and stuff where you get paid if people make a free account. Of course there are regular commission based offers also.

Perhaps you could get your own domain/site. Monetize that site. Then include a link on your Tumblr blog to your monetized site.

If you own your own blog or site, then you are not restricted like you are on places such as Tumblr, BlogSpot, etc.

Hey Chris, Once I had a better time with Tumblr & adsense. I used Pinterest to drive traffic. Currently, I am a little bit confused if adsense is still allowed for tumblr or not. As you've got good amount of followers, try to add some textual ads that is alternative to adsense. But, adsense is mostly preferred to me if it works these days! Best of Luck.

I did some more research and here's what I've done so far (quick version):

    1) Bought a domain name and pointed it to my blog so I have a custom URL. No more whatever.tumblr.com.

    2) Signed up with Exoclick

    3) Put the Exoclick ads between every post on my blog.

    Longer version:

I don't think Adsense would work because my blog has adult content. There's only maybe two posts with actual nudity but that's enough and the rest of the posts are provocative.

My research indicated that Tumblr doesn't really like affiliate links. It's possible to link to a landing page but even that's hit or miss. Tumblr likes to enforce its rules randomly and without warning.

They apparently ok with you putting ads on your blog (again, not affiliate links) as long as you get your own domain name.

I chose Exoclick because thery serve adult ads and it's quick and easy to sign up unlike CPA networks which can take a few days to get approved in my experience. I was serving ads with Exoclick in minutes rather than waiting days.

That said, I'm going to look more into CPA offers because I think that might be more lucrative. I'll see how it goes.

I highly recommend you get a "self-hosted" wordpress blog that you own and control. Tumblr can shut you down for any reason.

you monetize it by turning it into a traffic source.

Is there a common theme for your tumblr in the kind of content that gets shared the most?

double down on that, build your site and email funnel around it.
Monetize with related CPA, CB Affiliate offers and your own products..

    Best of luck,

    Chris,

Whatever you do - do not begin monetizing with ads, contextual, banner, or otherwise. You're already in a situation where Tumblr could close you down; you don't want to make it more likely to happen. Further: you have an income opportunity here that extends far beyond what a few localized ads will offer.

This is what you do. You leverage your 47K blog to do the following:
    • Grow SWF Blogs.
    • Grow NSFW Blogs.
    • Promote Off-Tumblr Socials.
    • Promote Off-Tumblr Blog Posts.
    • Content marketing (off-tumblr blog): non-adult newsletters.
You need to work under the assumption that Tumblr is going to close down your 47K blog. If you work under that assumption, you'll never hurt from it happening, because you'll have prepared for it.

The real trick here is to collect as many of your followers as possible, and spread those collections around, and in the process you want to promote non-adult BUT relevant / targeted blog posts that are well-monetized with a combination of contextual links and (for the lazy people) banners.

If i'm understanding this correctly, I should make posts on my tumblr that link to other blogs and social networking sites?

This is some heavy stuff and I'm so new at all of this that I'm not entirely sure what a lot of this means. I do have some technical expertise and can write code when necessary so that's something. I backed up the Tumblr to wordpress.com (it's private there) so if I do get shut down, at least I'll still have all the content. Right now I don't have hosting that will accept adult content but I'll look into that soon.

Thanks for the advice, everyone. I appreciate all of it.

You can monetize your Tumblr blog with from Google AdSense or other popular AdSense alternatives. Or you can sell ad space on your blog.
