Whats all this about Reddit?

I have a growing business and like every ambitious entrepreneur Im keen to explore and lean about any way that I can grow my business, so obviously I have a big interest in keeping up with any new marketing trends or techniques. But I have a dirty little secret, Im almost ashamed to say it â€" I DONT HAVE A CLUE ABOUT REDDIT!! Its a problem that started small but, the more I ignored it and the more time that went on the bigger the problem got. I cant believe its got to this stage, Its become like an elephant in the room that only I can see. Every time somebody talks about Reddit, be it associates, friends or even my teenage nieces or nephews I get a pang of shame and guilt. The same way as when you leave a bill unpaid for too long to the point where it gets out of hand and youre afraid to even look at it. So, Im here to ask. How does one market their business on Reddit? To the best of my knowledge Reddit is an open, anonymous forum where people discuss the topics that interest them, or the topics that make them angry. Is marketing on Reddit a simple case of starting a thread based on your business? Or by commenting on other threads relevant to your industry by mentioning your business? Or is there smarter way to make the most of the Reddit machine that Im missing here?

Basically, reddit is a place where you can read and submit online news, web content, and asks questions. They have different categories where you can subscribe in called reddits and sub-reddits. If you think you can add value to million readers and members of reddit then it's a good place to share it.

Reddit is a very real, honest community. It is great for research and online listening. However, blatantly advertising (and only advertising) is in poor taste and other users will notice it almost immediately.

I know Reddit also has a lot of traffic, but if you are trying to be seen by a lot of people. Your posts have to be super viral so that they can escalade to the top of the list.

Hey Alextrevayne. Thanks for your help. So I guess reddit works similarly to here, where user input pushes content to the top and such content generally receives more attention and votes. I'll take that into account going forward, I guess I have to create quality content first, then promote my business second.

      I appreciate the input.

  • One important caveat of Reddit: If you're overly self-promotional, you'll be downvoted into oblivion. You need to build up a positive reputation ("karma," in Reddit speak) by offering thoughtful, non-spammy contributions to others' posts before you start linking to your own blog or site.

You'll often see large excerpts or entire articles from marketers' blogs as Reddit postsâ€"and then at the very bottom of the post is a link to the blog from which the article is pulled. Add value first, then promote yourself.

Hey professional tweeter. (Judging by your name you must have some knowledge worth knowing so I appreciate your input). That makes sense. So reddit seems like quite the democratic platform where the power is in the hands of the many, rather than the few. Quite an admirable principal, if only the world in general followed suit. But thanks for the input anyway, it has helped to give me a clearer idea as to what I need to do going forward. It looks like reddit could be a powerful tool but I'll be sure to build up a bit of credit before I indulge in some promotions

      Thanks again.

Like alextrevayne said, Reddit is great for posts to go viral.

You can get a huge spike of traffic to your website - unfortunately many of those visitors might not return.

Reddit is a great medium for marketing IF you know how to use it properly. You need to post interesting stuff or at least have an interesting post title. Reddit is a very active community, so posting something engaging can really be beneficial for you and your business/blog.

Reddit is good if your article is updated with the current news. Personal development niche doesn't work well there.

I agree also that Reddit is one of the active communities where you can share your articles. Keep in mind that not because you have something to share people will link to it that easy or can get you tons of topic. Usually, I find relevant issues or news about latest topic which in turn attracts tons of readers or commentators.

You have to be very careful with Reddit as quickly as you can rise you can fall. I've had articles go viral, and now if a throw up a post I barely get 50 "upvotes."
