My experience with a FB contest

Hi People!, I just wanted to share with you an experience Ive just had this week with a Facebook contest.

I manage several fanpages for clients, there is one in particular that is just getting started, it had less than 100 likes when I took over it, and the client didnt had the money for starting investing in ads campaigns, so I convinced him to start a contest in order to get new likes.

The client accepted, and we organize a contest, the price are some of his products, and the CTA is that people have to share some post and give like to the fanpage in order to participate, the first results were quite good at the beginning, we got 40 shares (more or less) the first few days, but after that I started getting the feeling it was not flowing as expected, after two days the likes and shares stopped to come with the same frequency than the first days.

At that point, I convinced my client to make a very small investment on ads (7 USD), with a high level of segmentation (our targeted audience are vegetarian or vegan people of a very particular city), I actually thought I was going to get in troubles with FB, because I thought they didnt want people to use ads for promoting contests, I also thought I was not going to get a lot of results, because 7 dollars sounded like a very small budget.

But i was proven wrong, FB approved my ad, and after a few days the results were amazing, the reach of the posts went sky high, we got more than 100 shares and likes, and even some people started to make inquiries, it was just amazing.

Here are some screenshots of these results, I wanted to share them with you so you can have a look:

This are the general metrics of the Fanpage, you can see that FB differentiates the organic reach from the paid reach, which is great.

This are the particular metrics of the contest, you can see the amazing results, and the campaign is not finish yet, I think we will surpass the 200 participants in a few days if everything goes well.

After this, I also had another idea that I wanted to share with you to get your opinions, in my mind, all these people are essentially leads, potential clients, and I may not have all their data right now (you know, in a sheet or something like that), but I do have the ability to write directly to each and everyone of the persons that participated in the contest (they also had to comment on the post for participating, I forgot to mention that). So here is my idea, I will write to each and everyone of the participants after the contest is over, reaching them with a special discount of one of my clients products as a reward for participating.

Of course, I have already discussed this with my client and he is on board, what do you think? will this be a good idea for transforming some of all these leads into customers? Or am I just day dreaming on this? I would really like to know what you think!

Make the offer more attractive by making it both a LIMITED and SPECIAL OFFER: This is a one-time special offer our small business is giving out for our first 10 facebook page customers! First customers will also get notified about future deals first before the other customers. Offer ends (date).

Thats a good advice, do you think that setting up a deadline will encourage customers to buy the offer? I always had some doubts with that kind of strategies.

Nice detailed post. I have been thinking of doing some contests also on Instagram and now on Facebook as I just discovered one of my pages has grown a lot lately on it's own and am thinking of some kind of contest to do to grow it further.

One thing you can do is require them to opt into a list where you tell them they will draw the winner from that list so you can get them to optin and build a list of leads. Of course with each step you require them to take the sign up or participation rate could go down but the good side is you'll have created a list while doing the contest.

Yes I agree, In fact I almost used SocialTools for buidling the contest with a form, but I think its better if this kind of things are kept as simple as possible.

I was also quite surprised with the ads performance, I think it gave me those results because of the high level of segmentation I used, Ill try with a similar formula in another fanpage to see if the results repeat

  • Hi! I thought it would be a nice thing to update you people with the results on my campaign, thanks you all for your comments and suggestions.

The final number of participants in the contest is almost 300, an awesome number, the page likes are in 370 right now (it seems small, but since its a local business i actually think its ok), the fanpge got some amazing metrics with the contest, and we started to make some conversions out of there.

Tomorrow I will start to send messages to the people who participated, with the special promotions I told you about before, Im also thinking about using some targeted ads, creating an audience with the people that participated, for doing this I used an app for extracting the facebook ids of all the people that engage with the contest post, do you think this could be a good idea?.

So, I have a whole new audience in my clients fanpage, any advice on how to engage with them and enlarging it even more?
