Are we really using big data?

I went to the Argentinian Social Media Day a few days ago, it had some amazing panels and stuff, and there were two words that were repeated a million time during the conferences, the words "Big", and "Data".

Big data are the trending words right now in the Social Media Marketing environment, everyone is talking about them, everyone is trying to learn about them, everyone is saying that they use them in their strategies, I even read an article the other day that explain how data analyst were going to be the "profession of the future".

So much fuzz going on with this, lead me to ask this essential question: "Are we really using big data?", I mean, a lot of marketers are saying they do, but is that really true? or is it only some fashion statement?.

I googled it, and I couldnt find a lot of success cases of people that are really using big data in their strategies, so the first answer to that question may quite possible be "No".

But lets take this discussion seriously, before answering such a question maybe we should first ask our selfs, what exactly is Big Data? and how can it be used in Social Media?

The first question is quite simple: The term "big data" often refers simply to the use of predictive analytics, user behavior analytics, or certain other advanced data analytics methods that extract value from data, and seldom to a particular size of data set. This according to Wikipedia.

And the second question?, Well, thats a more complicated one, for start, the use of Big Data should allow us to have a better understanding of audience, and that insight should allow us to create better strategies, to know exactly what our audience wants and how they want it.

So, after clearing those matters, lets repeat the question, are we really using Big Data? I think the answer is still no.

I mean, of course we all ask our selfs what the audience wants before designing a strategy, but only making that question doesnt mean we are actually using Big Data, using Big Data will require us to use some kind of system for data recollecting and analysis, and lets be honest, thats not precisely something we can do with our macbooks, in fact, the whole "Big Data" was coined as a name because it showed how traditional infrastructure were incapable of analising the new data sets that are out there.

The whole point of this thread is to discuss if we are really using big data, and how we can really use it. I do believe big data is a big revolution, and those who use it, will had a lot of success, they will be able to have such a detailed understanding of their audience, that no one will be able to compite with them.

What do you think about this? Whats your experience with Big Data? Have you been able to use it in your strategies? How?
