5 commandments of Social media...and why you should stamp it on your gluteus!

I was listening to Bushra Azhar's webinar recently and thought it would be nice to share some of the very fundamentals of social media she taught during the epic one-hour session.

She called it "5 commandments of Social Media"

Before you even think about creating an FB ad, or an FB group, or a tweet or even an instagram post, these are some of the basic principles you should keep close to your heart and stamp it on your buttocks for remembrance:

1.Thou shalt stir controversy

If you are original and you firmly believe in something - even if it's against the popular beliefs, don't hesitate to share it and stir controversy. Your Ads, opinions, and even random comments must not be tailored for everyone. Instead, they should be crafted for the people who share similar opinion as yours.

You are worried that your strong views will offend the "guurus"? Well, let it be then. Remember, polarity always attracts the right people and repel the naysaying ones.

2.Thou shalt engage

Personally, I have noticed this myself. Being a member of different FB groups, I have seen admins creating posts, and then disappearing in thick smoke never to be seen till their next post.

Being the admin of a page/group your job is two-fold: 1. Initiating a conversation. 2. Closing a conversation.

3.Thou shalt not engage in word diarrhoea

Do your readers have to click that "see more" (On FB) option to understand your point? And you take too many sentences to convey your message?

You may be suffering from word diarrhoea.

Remember, social media is meant for bite-sized communication. If your ads, posts and even comments are long stories - even if they are intriguing, no one will read them. Why? Because people are tuned to shorter posts. If you have something lengthy to tell, better convey it through a quick video shoot.

Bottom line: Make sure your posts are succinct, to-the-point and convey your message within 4-5 lines. Better be a novelist if you can't do that.

4. Social is thy salvation (& thy curse)

When social media becomes your greatest weapon, behold the fact that you will be messing it up soon.

It will make you tons of money but at some point, it will drive you nuts. It has happened with Amy potterfield and it will happen with all the social media experts (just a matter of "when" rather than "if").

And so if that happens to you annd you messed up something publicly, don't hesitate to own it. Don't pretend that it never happened. Instead, take responsibility and make compensations, even if that involves publicly apologizing.

Deleting posts, comments, and blocking profiles won't be your scapegoat.

5. Honor thy reader

Respect your readers time and sensibilities.Posting something in groups that doesn't violate their rules and regulations is one thing, and posting something that is against their sensibilities is other.

For example, don't ever go on ranting about MLM's in a group that breaks bread on MLM. If you are against them, you must not be there in the first place.

Personally, I am not a social media expert. I would appreciate if others warrior could join in and add any of their "social media commandments."
